Hi everyone, I have recently been diagnosed with BPD and I'm struggling a lot with how and who to tell about it. I think my family, my mom mostly, has always suspected something was wrong but we don't really talk about these things and it was probably brushed off as "typical teenager behavior". I'm 22 now and I don't live with my family anymore, so they have no idea that I've been seeing a therapist etc. I don't have a lot of friends that I trust (actually can only say I fully trust one of them), so the only person who knows about my diagnosis is my girlfriend, who is actually extremelly supportive. Anyway, my question is, should I tell people about my diagnosis, and if so how? I have absolutely no idea how to approach this subject and it's making me really upset because I feel like everyone is slowly giving up on me as they have no idea what's going on so they don't understand why I act the way I do sometimes.

Listen to your heart, and look who you really trust, and if you feel safe with it..

I'ts hard to tell and to trust, but if you believe you want to share this with the people you want to. And if you think that it's a good idea, then you should. Don't get upset! Keep your head high, and look forward it. You won't lose anything if you share it. I guess..

Ehm.. I wish you anyways goodluck and stay strong 💪👀

Your girlfriend must be very kind to support you 👍 that's nice!

Now, listen to yourself.. and do what you want ^-^" and goodluck! 🐰🌸 ^-^

Do whatever you feel will benifit you the most- don't feel as though you have to tell people!

Just remember that BPD is just a label, it's not who you are, you're exactly the same person as you were before the diagnosis.

Good luck!

@sadlilpeach

Welcome! We are so glad you're here.

The best way, I find, to bring up sensitive issues with friends and family is to bring up a non-specific topic on mental health/illness. This is a great way to get a feel for how they are going to respond to your own struggles. They may surprise you. Given 1 in 4 people struggle with some form of mental health ailment leads me to believe that it is likely one of them also struggle with something similar. In the event that you do not get the response you are looking for, do not be discouraged. We are in an age of information and the conversation on mental illness and awareness has only just begun. The biggest road blocks I've had are older individuals from previous generations. They are from an old world where no one discussed these types of issues. Be patient and kind. Take the opportunity to share when you are ready. <3
