How to Approach Parents?

Hello,

I'm concerned with my mental health and believe that I have BPD, mainly because I show many of the symptoms of the disorder. I don't know how to discuss this with my parents without getting frustrated. Any ideas on how to bring up this concern and/or what to do in general?

Thank you.

I sort of get the feeling that you are taking responsibility for your parents. You seem to be saying that it's your job to bring up concerns with them in the right way, but they don't tell you in advance which way is right. This is very confusing and difficult. Or maybe I've interpreted it wrongly.

In general, if you think you have a serious mental illness then at some point you would need a formal diagnosis by a psychiatrist. This is just the same as for any illness—you would go to the right kind of specialist. Depending on your circumstances, a good starting point is usually your ordinary doctor, who can make a referral to an appropriate specialist. If your circumstances don't allow any of that, then that is confusing and difficult, too.

You can talk to listeners here about all this and hopefully get some more clarity, even though we are not experts and we can't give you advice. If you'd like to talk to me, feel free to send me a message.
