What do you do to control your emotions?

I have not been diagnosed with BPD, but I have my suspicions that I am because I have all of the symptoms. I am trying to get professional help, but due to financial issues I currently cannot obtain that help. So, as of now I am on my own trying to help myself every way I can by reading and doing research about BPD. But I would like to know what do you do to control your emotions?? Thanks for listening.

I too feel like I may have BPD. I'm still trying to find ways to cope but every day is a major roller coaster. I hope someone can let you know what their strategies are, seeing as I would like to know aswell.

Hi there, depending on ur age and family status, you could try Ur local mental health care facility. Depending on the day there is a walk in clinic. Maybe that can help u find out of you do have BPD and they can legally prescribe you medication to help. Hope this helps X

I am a college student and across the country from my family. I already went once to the college counselor and I dislike mixing personal things with school or work. And I do not wish to ask my parents for money, because technically I am an adult now.

For the longest i think i have been suffering from depression and anxiety. I feel paranoid when im alone so i surround myself with ppl who pretend to genuinely care about me, jus to feel wanted or needed. I have a 3yr old son and everytime i look at him, i feel like ive failed as his mother because his father is not around and im working dead end jobs just to keep the bills paid. I want to go back to school but bc of my financial situation i cant afford it. I feel like my life is gonna be stuck on this path for the rest of my life.

I sometimes control my emotions by counting to ten seconds then breathe deeply. Hope it helps you today.

Thank you! I have actually tried doing this especially when I get angry, it really does calm me down a bit.

When I'm experiencing a distressful emotion, I try giving myself compassion, as a mother would console her child, by compassionately and calmly observing the emotion in the body. If I'm on my own and able to take a break, I also try to meditate for a few minutes by gently focusing my attention on my breath. This helps me to calm down and not get carried away with the thoughts that may have triggered the distressful emotion.

Saddly I cut myself. It's my only escape. Cut myself or eat like a crazy pig. I avoid fights with that... Weak, I know.

@BerryTea

You aren't weak for your struggles, you are strong for admitting them and doing your best to get through them.

I personally have stuggled my entire life to handle my emotions. My mother knew I was borderline before they could legally diagnose me with it. I've always gone the cutting or self harm route, and binge eating, or breaking things and completely lashing out. I still struggle with not reacting in this way as an adult, and sometimes I slip, and I still have a huge problem with binge eating.

Lately, what I find helps a little, in regards to my rage at least, is to try and take a few seconds before reacting. It's really tough, but I almost play out what will happen if I let my emotions run wild and try to react in the best possible way.

With my varying other waves of emotions, I try to remain stoic, and act on emotions at a later time when my head is more clear, whether it be joy or sadness or any other type of emotion. As much as it sucks being almost entirely numb, it sort of helps me live my life without much trouble.

The only downside though, is that eventually too much pressure builds, and I end up burning out and breaking down and that state lasts a while. It's not a perfect system, but it's what works for me right now

Hello, i might be having BPD even thougj i still havent gone to a professional. I, what i do to control my emotions, i got to decide who i wanna be first. Honestly here im having a lot of problem with low self-image (im still working for it). Though i must admit it has improved than before, but before i was really bad (in a way). Before i didnt even try to work for myself, or having my own voice, opinions, i follow the crowds and i always pretending my whole life. I still do that now, though. I hate it when i do it. I wanna change who i am. I hate when those voices in my head suddenly change to "youre better than everyone" to "youre so pitiful everyone hates you" i hate to be like that. I hate myself. I feel like im a terribly, awful person compared to the others who has a great big heart, who always willing to help people and is dare to be who ever they want to be, without being afraid what people might react to it. But i know, some people work very hard to be who they want to be, they are not as careless as we thought they are, they fight it so they would be able to shut people down (who judge them). Those people are my inspirations. I want to have a sincere heart and thats what im gonna do. Im still working on it too so im very sorry if this doesnt help. But what do i do to control my emotions and actions are to keep my mind, remember who i want to be, focusing on my mission rather than the negative thoughts and triggering situations leading me to lose control or lose clear vision of "right now"/whats going on right now(i know this is harder than ever, i am currently facing through it too, and some of the days, i failed it)but i think the most important is to not giving up. My worst symptom is to "all or nothing" thinking. So once i failed at one little moment, i decide to wreck the whole day left, and its literally not the best decision you'd make. So dont. Give. Up.
