connecting with people/feeling wanted

anyone feel like they cant make a connection with others or once you do you’re not able to maintain the interest? (either from your side or theirs).

I just feel immense emptiness & loneliness all the time.

Ive never been a very social person and ive always had one friend at a time that ive clung to, currently my longest friendship is from 2019 and its barely there. Ive always either ghosted friends or they’ve cut me off bcs of my (undiagnosed mental illness at the time) and now at my big age i find it so hard to develop a friendship with acquaintances and i feel like i’ll never have the type of friendships i crave so badly: people that make me feel wanted all the time, that don’t prioritize other friends over me, people that understand that even though i seem well adjusted and too stoic to care about not being around others it’s the only that genuinely makes life worth living for me. I’ve expressed that with friends before but it still occurs.

I’d think that a lot of people feel the exact same way, they have to!! so either no one wants to admit to it or im completely fucked and shouldve clung onto childhood friendships so i’d have people to spend time with.

(i really try not to seem like im complaining without trying to find a solution so i hope this doesnt seem that way, honestly i mainly just wanna see if others relate and if they’ve found a way to get through this. hope would be nice)

@bobozebraman

I'm sorry to hear that you feel lonely and disconnected from others. It sounds like you've been through a lot and it's tough when friendships don't work out the way we want them to.
I wanted to give you some advice based on what you said in your post.

First, it's important to remember that you can't expect people to prioritize you if you downplay the importance of the friendship. You need to show other people that THEY are important to you. And that you appreciate their company.

Secondly, try to be more understanding of other people's perspective and their feelings. It sounds like you desire a very intense type of relationship, and not everyone desires that level of intensity. Sometimes your behavior will push people away, and you will need to use your skills to control that behavior.

At the same time, there are many opportunities to make friends.

Some of the key ideas are:
* You can stay in touch and show appreciation to existing friends/ acquaintances and develop your relationships with them.
* You can volunteer somewhere, especially in a team effort /working with a group on a project or cause you are passionate about.
* You can Take up a sport or join a gym.
* You can start a book club / join a local book club / join a virtual book club
* You can join professional organizations (for example a local engineers club)
* You can join a support group for people struggling with issues similar to yours (for example: a depression support group)
* try a local meetup & events websites such as Meetup.com or Eventbrite

I wish you all the best in your journey to find lasting friendships!
