I’m on the verge of losing my person and I’m not okay. I’ve been hearing voices that sound so real — the voice of a woman, and what sounds like my boyfriend having phone sex. I’ve reacted negatively and I’m pushing him to the point of leaving. :(

Hi, sorry that that's happening. Sounds scary to feel like you're going to lose someone special that you're reliant on. 😢

Just want to make sure I'm understanding what's happening. Is this the situation? (Please do correct if I'm misunderstanding.)

  1. You're really afraid of losing your boyfriend
  2. Because of that fear/stress, you're hearing voices (having auditory hallucinations) that involve him cheating on you
  3. The voices are making you feel more stressed, but when you share what you're hearing or your fears with your boyfriend hoping to work through those fears, it feels like it makes things worse or increases the tension/conflict

Great, glad I understood. 💜

You mentioned that you're on the verge of losing your boyfriend. I'm wondering what your boyfriend has been saying or doing that leads you to think that he's at the point of leaving?

(Basically, I'm sort of curious what he's thinking/feeling. I feel like if the goal is to have him stay, maybe part of making that happen will involve trying to understand what's making him uncomfortable or causing him stress and seeing if there's a way to alleviate that and care for his needs--while still taking care of your own feelings and caring for your needs.)

Well, let me preface by saying I have BPD, and I believe I’m showing symptoms of schizophrenia. He’s been by my side throughout this entire journey, from the very beginning, prior to my diagnosis of BPD, to now 2 years later. He’s been a saint, and so so patient. I will also mention that he has not been completely faithful to me, and has cheated on me twice. Once, sexually. And once, emotionally. Since, he has done everything to earn my trust back and do his part to repair our relationship. I, however, have fell short. I think that I haven’t really allowed him the opportunity to repair it, honestly. In every situation that arises that puts trust to the test and gives me an opportunity to trust him, I take the ladder every time and only see the negative, and assume the worst. And I’ve been proven wrong every time. So yeah. Our relationship hasn’t exactly been rainbows and butterflies, but I have come to realize that no relationship is. It’s about being with the one you love and feel a connection like no other with, who understands you, and chooses to put the work in. And that would be him. Nevertheless, back to the main point. Over time, as I’ve gone into episodes and acted on emotion/impulsivity, acted out, said hurtful things I don’t mean, etc… he has taken quite a beating (not physically; I would never ever physically harm him. More of an emotional beating, which is also just as bad). He’s tired. I get it. So he’s voiced leaving on many occasions and breaking up. And there’s been times where I’ve been in an episode and suggested breaking up, because I don’t want him to have to deal with this any more than he already has. I don’t want to hurt him. But lately, I’m hearing literal voices every time I can’t see his mouth. I hear him, and another woman. But there’s been so many instances where I hear it, I peek around the corner, and he’s sleeping. I more so hear it loud and clear when he’s showering. So one day last week I beat the door down, and he absolutely lost it (rightfully so; he’s ex military and ex cop so to him, being in the shower is his most vulnerable state where he can’t protect himself) and his fight or flight kicked in. He said some hurtful things, so did I. Then I suggested we break up, and I made a list of things he’s done that have hurt me throughout our relationship (again, nothing ever physical; we’ve never even come to that or had any intentions on doing so). That message made him kinda come to realization that he thinks he’s not a good partner or good for me. And I told him that he’s a great partner in many ways, but yeah, the first year of our relationship he was kinda *** to me. At this point he just doesn’t see me being able to work through those things because he thinks they sit on my mind everyday causing me to hold resentment towards him. Which, I told him I don’t necessarily resent him, and those things don’t cross my mind everyday. Only when situations arise that seem like repetitive behavior that would remind me of them. Which is rare. So that’s where we’re at currently.

Thanks for sharing all of that. 💜 I feel like you have a really deep understanding of everything that's happening in the situation, especially the empathy that you have for your boyfriend and your appreciation of what he's doing.

  • Your boyfriend cheated on you multiple times, and that's created a lot of deep distrust
  • He's been working really hard to earn that trust back, but the things that he's done in the past really hurt you a lot and it really scares you in the present. There's been so much doubt/fear from your side that it's difficult to reciprocate the connection and try to trust him.
  • When you're in episodes, you sometimes say and do hurtful things that you later regret. He's taken an emotional beating over a long period of time and he's been very patient, but it's understandable that maybe he's worn down and hitting his limit.
  • Recently, you've been hearing voices that feed into that paranoia of "he's doing something unfaithful" and that's making things much worse. Based on one of those auditory hallucinations, you beat down the door while he was showering, which is crossing a line and understandably caused him to freak out since it threatens his own sense of safety.
  • There are certain specific situations that are reminiscent of past experiences that trigger the episodes of strong distrust (as well as the voices).

***

If I were him, I imagine I'd not only want to feel like you understand and care about him and what he's experiencing (which it's clear you do 💜) but also feel some reassurance that there's a process or path by which things are going to hopefully get better. I imagine that safety/trust might be becoming an issue for him too (the inevitability that you're going to do/say things that hurt him, the unpredictability of not knowing when it will happen, the increasing intensity/scariness of those episodes when they do occur, the lack of control of not being able to prevent that from happening or do anything to make it better no matter what he does).

I wonder where you see things going from here. If you're in therapy, is your boyfriend involved in that process at all?
