Welcome to Self Reliance Discussion!

Self reliance means reliance on personal abilities and own resources, rather than those of others.

Some positive aspects of developing Self-reliance can be:

  • Means we can solve problems and make decisions by ourselves. This is important as we grow older and learn to live independently

  • It allows us to feel happier about ourselves, without needing to rely on others.

  • It involves developing self-acceptance.

  • It involves acquiring self-knowledge and practicing self-compassion

  • It gives us direction.

Now that we have seen some positive aspects for practicing self reliance, we can explore how we feel about it. Feel free to answer to the following questions or to share your own experience with your own words 😊

  1. What is your perception of your self reliance?

  2. What are some things that make it difficult to believe that you can rely on yourself?

  3. How can you practice  self compassion?

  4. Share some positive aspects you think about improving your self reliance!

@MeaningfulSilence hi I am actually on opposite end of this now think I need more interconnectedness.

But I get it. With first husband and his family I had become a big spreading mushroom I was almost completely dependent and they enabled helplessness.

This all changed when first husband fell to addictions and I had to run for my life with clothes on my back, my purse, phone and laptop.

I never saw him or that house again. It was terrifying. I moved out of state it was the single biggest leap of faith in my life. My legal family wanted me close by to maintain control ensure I kept their abuse a secret.

In the new state I got my own apartment. I was not that responsible but I was growing fast and shrinking in size as my life depended on it!

Husband and I finalized divorce they wrote the decree 9/11.

I ran for my life 2nd husband years later on 9/11; not planned!

Now on third best final marriage; now I can say I have lived in five states and I know I can fully care for myself as I do it daily.

No regrets!!

That's amazing! I can't imagine how difficult it must have been for you, but you are so brave for making a new life for yourself, not just once, but twice!

@MeaningfulSilence

I don't feel that I can fully trust or rely even partially on anyone, except myself and God almighty.

@MeaningfulSilence

Hi, Silence,

I want to take part in this post on self-reliance, but it is too much reading for me.  I'm in grad school, and I have more reading to do than is humanly possible.  So, when I look at your post and how long it is, my brain just puts up a brick wall.  I can't even try.  But I'm sure it's a good post.
