I met a little hummingbird
With soft eyes and a broken heart
She told me how she'd spent many a day
Travelling, wide and far
She'd scourged for food, day and night
Her children were her cause
But now, lost, without a guide,
They didn't know where she was
Her tale moved me- it is often so-
I told her not to fret
Offered my assistance, gave her hope
There may be a chance yet
And so, that little hummingbird
And I travelled the unruly land
We came across a bear, a toad
We formed a merry band
And when the moon broke the night
And in the dark, took her stand
We came across a point where
River met land
"For days and days I've searched to be
Where now we stand,"
The hummingbird chirped sweetly,
As we tried to understand
"But darling, my lovely bird,"
Said I, in a daze
"Are they across this river,
Upon which we now gaze?"
"My children," said she, "have long since passed
This river, and many more
But now they stand in glittering gold
Upon God's heavenly shore
And I, upon finding them,
Swore to whoever would hear
My days would end upon this bank,
And I'd follow my darlings there."
We moved to her, started, all,
As she took to the sky
And though we cried in our fear,
She made her final dive
I met a little hummingbird,
With soft eyes and a broken heart
And though today, her I still mourn
She's where her children are

@Tulipsmile thank you for this. I dont think ive ever recieved such a detailed response to my writing, and im so grateful to you for it! I feel like alot of times we try to help someone thats convinced theres nothing but the way out, and its frustrating and tragic but you do have to believe you tried and that theyre at peace now. In my brain, the hummingbird felt sorrow at how she was misleading the others in a way, but grateful that she had company at the end. Sometimes that's all we can do- be company at the end
