The Burden

(This is a new one, just a particularly dark corner of something or other, and I just feel kind of sad and angry.)

The Burden

Help me,

I've been given something sacred,

So sacred that I can't even bear to look at it.

Please,

I'm crying out to be relieved of this burden,

That sits heavier than any sin.

Somebody,

I've been cursed and afflicted,

With all the love in the world,

And all the darkness that comes with it.

Keep me through the next centuries.

Keep me in ways that can't be measured.

They won't upload me,

They won't download any updates to me.

And I'm anything but obsolete,

I'm anything you need, but…

I've tried to look something pure in the eyes,

But I just grind my teeth,

I just give myself eye strain,

I have a sore throat,

Or is that from all the screaming?

I just want my heart pounding,

I want to feel my skin break out in gooseflesh,

I want to feel my mouth go dry,

When this burden is lifted.

I want to feel like I'm falling,

Because I know I will be…

Something so sacred, so beautiful,

I can't believe I'm saying this,

But I just can't be responsible,

To keep anything sacred,

Let alone this.

You let something in...

You let something stay...

I saw you...

The moment I closed my eyes...

I witnessed the greatest evil imaginable,

The day I got lost trying to map out paradise,

The day I fell somewhere between realities,

The day I got really sick and couldn't join everyone...

I saw you...

You laughed...

The burden has a twin in reflection,

All the burden remains...

My hands hesitate to feel my pocket,

To see whether I dropped my keys,

Or if they just got heavier.
