When Prayer
Feels Like Persuasion
When a prayer feels
like a speech of persuasion—
rehearsed, repeated,
pleading into silence—
I get on my knees,
eyes clenched shut,
and in that instant
I fall
into an abyss of darkness.
A sudden, jerking thought:
I haven’t left my room.
Yet the familiar, haunting silence
renders me speechless,
fearful—
that like before,
I will rise from the floor
with no answer,
no Mediator present,
no prayers ascending like incense to heaven.
A harsh wind of unbelief
disintegrates my words like mist.
Discouragement chains my prayers
deep in the pit of my stomach,
while daily
I’m being served
the same bitter portion
of waiting.

You mention "no answer." That suggests that you are praying with the hope of an answer, or at least consider that one is possible. In that case, the source from which the answer is hoped for, is the "audience."
Many believe "answers" come in the form of synchronistic events. While some believe those events are answers, others believe they are coincidences.
Some believe answers should come as some kind of inner voice.
I feel kind of open to whatever form the answer may take. I'll accept a synchronistic event as an answer, even if it's coincidental. There is an often repeated theory, "there are no coincidences," suggesting that intention or prayer really does affect the unfolding of reality. Since the truth of the matter is unknowable, at least from a human perspective, I rarely think about it.
When I talk about an "audience within," I'm referring to the place that's the origin of intuition, which in my opinion includes interaction with a form of consciousness that's not limited to the mass of grey substance we call the brain.
