A Comet of Well Wishes
You’re a comet streaking across the sky,
A flicker of hope in a sea of darkness,
A wish whispered on trembling lips,
But your brilliance casts shadows,
While your tail ignites the night.
You blaze through hearts,
Igniting dreams with your fiery glow,
But in your wake,
You leave only chaos.
You gather the stars,
Thinking you can light their paths,
But your orbit is erratic,
And when you spiral down,
You crash like a meteor,
Shattering everything you touch.
You keep saying, “I didn’t mean to hurt,”
As if your apologies could mend the scars,
As if regrets could turn back time,
But the impact is heavy,
And the echoes of your passage
Rattle through their lives.
You reach out,
Trying to guide the lost,
But every hand you touch
Is scorched by your brilliance,
And now you wonder
If the wishes you granted
Were worth the destruction you left behind,
If the light you brought
Has left you in the dark.
If the fire you sparked
Was worth lives blown away as ashes.
And you are so very sorry.
You would tremble while crying,
Creating tremors across the land,
Shaking everyone and everything to prove
That you are indeed very sorry.
And the tsunami waves
Of tears will vouch for you.
But at what cost?
If there are no lives left to see your remorse
If everything ended in your tears of deluge.
@azurePond 👏👏👏 I don't know if that poem is about, love, war, religion. But it reminded me of all 3❤ you are amazing, your poems are just fantastic. One day you'll be the greatest poet of all time ❤
@Tinywhisper11 Aww, thank you so much! 🙏 Your words mean the world to me! 💖 I love that it made you think of all those things, that's the magic of poetry, isn't it?
@azurePond
I love how you described the comet’s mesmerising features then awaken our senses with its destructive nature. Wonderful way of looking at the two sides of a coin, if I may say so. It beautifully captures the tension between intention and consequence. Love it.
@azurePond
I feel especially treated lately, with so many AzurePond pieces to gorge on. And this one is very much a delight.
I thought your imagery was amazing. Cosmological, biblical, supernatural. The thought of some elemental djinn or wayward angelic presence is conjured to mind through your metaphors. This creature of hedonistic exuberance who comes tearing into the lives of others and leaving them burnt out and broken in it's wake. For me the presence reminded me of some fae creature who lives by different rules to us mere mortals, and who's presence is entrancingly bright but which we cannot survive sustained contact with. Worse still, the destruction wrought in their wake is not malicious but unthinking and without the capacity for true understanding.
Yet we also see that this being is still very, very much human. They ride the firmament, but they too will come down eventually as we are shown in the third stanza. This is not some one off incident, but a pattern repeated. The same mistakes, the same misguided intentions, causing harm over and over.
The sense of remorse and incapacity to change, be it themselves or the effects of their involvement in the lives of others feels deep and sincere, but we view with the narrators eyes; Apologies are not enough. Regret is insufficient. We see just how deeply the narrator feels, and it is seismic. The second to last stanza speaks of how the subject would be, would effect things, would feel if they could comprehend. The devastating images seem to reflect what the narrator DOES feel. Their own restrained disappointments and anger shaking beneath the surface and the flood of tears held in check.
The last stanza thus feels utterly hopeless. The very descriptions of the subject, not matter how pointedly they mark the flaws, still could not escape from the entrancing beauty and allure. They are as much a victim and devotee. Perhaps they may even suffer more than most, for they can see the danger for what it is but are helpless to feel otherwise. The subject seems doomed to repeat their failures, and even if they could understand...which it seems they will not....it will either be too late, or pointless.
The whole poem is so dynamic and energetic. The vibrancy of the imagery really offsets the references to devastation, distracting us, perhaps much in the way of the victims of this glorious bringer of light and chaos. I thought it was a really excellent poem, and I like it very much.
@BastionKnight Just when I think Bastian Knight’s given me the biggest compliment, the knight goes and raises the bar again (What do knights raise, flags? Standards? I’ll Google it, forgive my lack of expertise in knights and their domain). Honestly, it’s like I’ve unlocked the premium version of compliments… wait, did I just compare you to an app? Right, let me chuck on my poetic hat – you’re like a cornucopia of compliments… though not an actual horn, you get what I mean. It’s a genetic thing in my family, we’re rubbish at giving compliments– unless it’s ... something like the Monalisa . And I’m not exactly great at accepting compliments either (that’s a “me” thing). But honestly, I do appreciate your words. And like I told Tiny Whisper, I’ll do my best to live up to them. Thank you so much! Also - everyone here showers me with compliments, that is why there is a lot of poems (I am vain like that)😁
@azurePond
A wish whispered on trembling lips.
The infallibility of love, the courage it demands, wearing your heart in your sleeve, leaves your heart open to being bled, the ups, the downs, captured in every line, every word, your poetry draws you in, makes you feel, knocks on the door of your hardened emotions, reawakens them. There's something mesmerising about each word you choose, like every word fits like a jigsaw puzzle, thank you 💜🥰
