She becomes the rain

Do you know what sadness the rain brings?

And how the gutters weep when it pours?

And how lonely one feels lost in it?

Without end—like spilled blood, like starving love

She lies in the gutter, her gaze fixed above,

Reaching for the sky she can never touch

Each raindrop a reminder of what she’s lost,

A dream too distant, at too great a cost

The rain mixes with dirt at her feet,

Flooding the hollow where hopes retreat

The sky mocks her with every gray tear,

While she drowns in the weight of each year

The water rises, creeping slow,

Her chest tightens as breath lets go.

Rain and gutter water begin to entwine,

Her tears —dissolving the line

Her eyes burn as the storm takes her in,

Swallowed whole by the flood’s cruel spin

Yet in that suffocating, endless shroud,

At last -

She becomes the rain,

She becomes the sky.

@azurePond Another very good poem by the excellent Azure Pond. I really liked the way the poem gradually moves into rhyming couplets beginning in the second stanza. It really enhances the feeling of a storm rolling in, the first few drops erratic and unevenly spaced and then building up faster and heavier as the rain begins to pour.

You consistently use very powerful imagery with your poem. Looking forward to reading more!
