5 Reasons Maintaining a Skin-Care Routine Is Good for Your Mental Health
A daily cleanser, a nighttime mask, or even a bit of tinted moisturizer can save the appearance of your skin — and have major effects on your emotional well-being. “Caring for my skin is one of the first steps in my self-care routine,” says Erum Ilyas, MD, a board-certified dermatologist with Montgomery Dermatology in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. When skin looks and feels good, we tend to feel better about ourselves,” she says. Here are five powerful reasons why.
Health-boosting routines include healthy eating habits, exercise, journaling, and skin care,” says Matt Traube, a licensed clinical psychotherapist and a psychodermatologist in Santa Barbara, California. Those routines are critical for your overall health, in both body and mind. In a study published in June 2018 in the Lancet Psychiatry, researchers found that people who have less consistent routines throughout the active parts of their day were more likely to suffer from major depressive and bipolar disorders, mood problems, loneliness, and less happiness.
1. A Skin-Care Routine Provides Stability in Your Day That Benefits Your Mental Health
2. Focusing on Doing Something Nice for Yourself Helps Stop a Worry Spiral
3. Pampering Skin on a Regular Basis Triggers a Cascade of Chemicals in Your Brain to Boost Your Mood
4. Skin Care Provides a Chance to Bond With Loved Ones — and That’s a Boon to Mental Health
5. Caring for Your Skin Is an Act of Kindness That Sends a Powerful Message
There are numerous ways to practice self-care, but
focusing your efforts on improving skin health pays off for your mental and
emotional health, too. “I find that there is a direct correlation between my
skin-care routine and my mood,” says Moreno. “Taking the time to nurture my
skin affects my mind and body. It boosts my confidence and gives me a sense of
control over how my day will go.”
Things to remember
A combined biopsychosocial approach is vital in understanding and managing psychodermatological conditions.

Self-care does wonders for our mental health!
Maintaining a regular skin care routine can be a bit challenging, especially after a long day, but it can be very beneficial!
Thanks for the article Dew! 💛✨
@innateJoy9602 It's so true that getting used to a skincare routine is quite challenging. Same goes for exercising and nutrition I believe.
However, once someone makes healthy living a habit, it can really make a difference, not only on their body but on their mental health as well. It's simply because when people show themselves that they deserve some time and care, they immediately increase their self-respect and this has a huge impact on their confidence levels!
Thank you for reading!
@calmDew1576 This is a very interesting article! I make sure to always do my skincare no matter what and I think it helps me calm down after a stressful day.
@comfortableNight4463 I can totally relate to this. I used to be bored to maintain a routine but the results are so rewarding that once you stick with it you don't want to give up!
It's not just about the appearance but because of the stress releaving benefits general self-care offers, as you also mentioned. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Night!
@calmDew1576 Exactly! This is a wonderful explanation. Thank you!
@calmDew1576 I think self-care, in some way, shape or form, is so important to our well-being! If we don't do something that makes us happy, we will never unwind and relax! We all have things we love doing - it's just important to take that time to do it!
@fruityPond7887 Tht's so true! Consistency is the key. Sometimes it can even feel challenging or weird to set ourselves as a priority when we only have -let's say- 5 hours of sleep before work!
But as I mentioned, when we do self-care it's like a proof to ourselves that we're worthy. This means higher levels of self-esteem and better performance in longterm.
Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts!
@calmDew1576 I agree! It can be hard to make time for ourselves, but it's so important to make ourselves a priority. Thank you so much!
