Championing Sensitivity
“Sensitivity is something to be championed, not rejected.
None of us are taught how to navigate emotions. There isn’t a class in school,
there isn’t a discussion with our parents, it’s an art far too many of us are
forced to learn once we become adults. For many, this is too late.
Sensitivity is a superpower and not something to be ashamed of. Just because life is built to exist on an emotionless plain where your output is lauded over the struggle it took you to get there, it doesn’t mean you have shown up that way. In any case, trying to push away something that is innately you rarely works.
Beginning to accept your sensitivity means firstly stripping away the barriers that have held your emotions back. It then involves proactive choice to express them AND successfully regulate them. Another reason we hold them back is that we simply don’t know how to let them out gently. This can lead us to sudden outbursts where we overload ourselves and those around us with them.
In some cases it takes support. From a good partner who you can trust, a family member, or a therapist. Mastering your emotions isn’t unlike watching a superhero try to use their powers for the first time. You don’t know how to navigate them until you try.
But choosing to embrace your sensitivity IS the right thing to do. The world needs more of you. The balance of life is tipped toward the masculine side and it’s refreshing to see people hone their emotions.”

✨Discussion: Understanding our own sensitivity is essential. I truly believe that not every aspect of who we are needs to be altered. Sensitivity helps us be aware of threats and protects us. It is also the basis of sympathy and empathy.
Taking down the walls that have kept your emotions in check, is the first step in learning to accept your sensitivity. Then, it includes making a deliberate decision to both express and effectively control them.
Sensitivity shouldn’t be something that is scorned.
✨Reflection: Would you consider yourself a sensitive person?
