Do you have enough support?

Ask yourself if you have at least a few friends or family members who:

· You feel comfortable to be with;

· Give you a sense that you could tell them anything;

· Can help you solve problems;

· Make you feel valued;

· Take your concerns seriously.

Connect To Your Community

A great way to feel emotionally strong and resilient in times of stress is to feel connected to a broad community. Think about the things you like to do. You can expand your social network by looking into a community organization that brings people together who share the same interests. For instance, many communities have local biking, hiking, or walking groups. Is there something you've always wanted to do like learn a new language? Take a class, or join a local group. You also may find the support you need through local support groups for a specific issue like parenting, dealing with a health problem, or caring for a loved one who's ill. Consider volunteering with a community organization that helps fill a need.

Create Joy And Satisfaction

Living with a mental health condition can be taxing emotionally, physically, and mentally. Experts have found that good feelings can boost your ability to deal with stress, solve problems, think flexibly, and even fight disease. Taking care of your body emotionally, physically, and mentally through creating joy and satisfaction is an important part of living with or without a mental health condition.

Meditate

Research shows that meditation offers not only calm, but also helps with anxiety and depression, cancer, chronic pain, asthma, heart disease and high blood pressure.

To get started, all you need is a few minutes each day. Later you may want to work up to 10, 20, or 30 minutes. You can find one of many meditation options in a book or CD, online, or in a class. Or you can try some suggestions below. If one doesn't work, stay calm...and try another.

@calmDew1576

Thank you for creating this post calm! It’s wonderful to see that people want to highlight how important having support is. Not only can it boost our confidence but on the bad days, people who are there for us remind us that failure isn’t the end of the world.

@calmDew1576 I don't have any family members of friends. But I live in a old folks nursing home. I'm only 22 years old so it's not ideal. But I have lots of support from carers and healthworkers so I'm very lucky. And being the youngest resident I get treated like a princess 😁 yaay!

I know that it was learning Deep Breathing & Meditation that has helped me battle my last bout of depression. Even though I'm fairly new at it (about 4 months) it has changed me in so many positive ways. I like guided meditation. InsightTimer.com is the best (and free) app for guided meditation.

I do not have much support. Sometimes I need to talk to sort out my feelings. This week there was a big event and I was confused, frustrated, and filled with uncertainty. I sent a text to my daughter(a psychologist) but her response hurt. She is going through a divorce so she isn’t able to be supportive. That just wasn’t a good choice. Then I tried to open the conversation with my husband and he shut down into silence. So I decided to open this app. Maybe, next time I need to work something out I can come to this site. I do have a girlfriend who has been my friend for over 60 years. She is away on vacation. Sometimes she is a good support.
