How To Ease The Transition To College When Mental Health Is A Concern

School is starting up again! Which means college freshmen will soon start a new journey. Making the transition from high school to college can be challenging, especially for students who have mental health issues. Most students find the transition to be hard. However, there are methods for making it simpler.

Students who are continuing their therapy or taking medications while in university may need to switch physicians and pharmacists. Thus, it is crucial to remember or try to make these transitions before the start of the semester. This helps prevent disruptions and takes away any anxiety so that you, the student, can focus on this new thrilling journey.

Nearly 100,000 college students were surveyed in 2021 by the American College Health Association. This survey discovered that 16% of college males and 33% of college women were presently diagnosed with anxiety. Moreover, it also found that 14% of college men and 25% of college women had been diagnosed with depression. Therefore, it may bring comfort to know that you are not alone in this journey!

So, lets discuss some takeaways and insightful things to keep in mind. If you are a student with a mental health concern, remember to inquire with your doctor about your sessions; whether you can maintain them or need to switch.

Additionally, remember to keep your insurance in mind. Many students switch insurance coverage when they make the transition to college. Therefore, check with providers and your insurance!

Lastly, look up the college’s counseling center and research the resources they provide! Chances are your school has some beneficial resources already at hand!

Best of luck and remember to enjoy the new and exciting experience!
