It’s Okay To Be Envious. It Can Even Be A Good Thing.

"Several human feelings, so we are told, are undesirable. These feelings are not only deemed wrong by society, but they are also unpleasant to experience. One emotion we don't like to wallow on for too long is envy.

When a member of our circle possesses something, we desire, such as a devoted group of friends or a fulfilling career, it is unpleasant to feel envious or inferior. Envy can surface more often than we'd like when everybody we know—and many people we don't—constantly publicize their victories and luxuries everywhere.

Admitting we are envious in the first place is arguably the hardest part of using envy as a positive force. However, if we don't acknowledge our envy, we won't be able to deal with it effectively and may alternatively stew in emotions of bitterness or inadequacy. Therefore, instead of limiting yourself, let envy MOTIVATE you."

Takeaway: It can be beneficial to admit you are envious. Usually, it's simpler on our ego to portray the circumstance as an unfairness instead of having to confess that we fell short in some way. However, if we don't acknowledge our jealousy, we can't effectively deal with it. So, after you admit to yourself that you feel this emotion, consider how you can improve. Additionally, use it as a way to encourage you to set a goal and reach to achieve it. Envy and other negative emotions serve a purpose by alerting us to conditions that require improvement. Therefore, use envy to your advantage. Use it as a tool to improve yourself and achieve success.

Reflection: Can you think of a way to reframe envy as motivation?

I find that envy can actually be a potent motivator to pursue your own goals! I find myself often envy of people's health and body at the gym and sometimes internalizing that really gives me the extra push to work out even harder. Of course it's in a sense where the envy does not degrade or defame the other person rather coming from admiration of what that person has done for themselves and wishing that upon yourself.
