ScienceDaily: How meditation can help you make fewer mistakes
"The research, published in Brain Sciences, tested how open monitoring meditation -- or, meditation that focuses awareness on feelings, thoughts or sensations as they unfold in one's mind and body -- altered brain activity in a way that suggests increased error recognition.
"People's interest in meditation and mindfulness is outpacing what science can prove in terms of effects and benefits," said Jeff Lin, MSU psychology doctoral candidate and study co-author. "But it's amazing to me that we were able to see how one session of a guided meditation can produce changes to brain activity in non-meditators."
The findings suggest that different forms of meditation can have different neurocognitive effects and Lin explained that there is little research about how open monitoring meditation impacts error recognition.”
My Takeaways From This Article
Meditation can be beneficial for those who may be quite forgetful according to this study. Researchers from Michigan State University found that meditation was able to make the brain more prone and aware of its surroundings which in turn helped participants be less forgetful and more sensitive to the environment around them.
As a procrastinator and someone who often forgets things due to not actively writing down all events or reminders on an external source, I realize that often my mind will forget about something because my head was far more distracted from something else than the task at hand.

What are some ways that help you not forget something?
#Forgetting #Meditation
@sunnyWriting4806 Thanks for this article! I usually meditate for 5 minutes every morning and I find that my mind is more 'clear' and I can focus way better than if I had not.
@comfortableNight4463
That's great! I'm glad that you're able to utilize meditation in a great way to start off your mornings!
@sunnyWriting4806 Thank you! I'm very grateful for it!
@sunnyWriting4806 Maybe I should try meditating more because my brain fog is horrific these days, I think due to my meds lol. I usually write down little notes on my phone to keep my from forgetting things or I try to do something when it pops into my head at that moment so I can forget about it later!
Oh, I totally get you!
While I tend to have a pretty overactive mind when it comes to long term memories, I have pretty bad short term memory.
I usually write something I absolutely can't forget down, take a picture (if handwritten) or a screenshot (if written in notesapp) and set it as my phone background.
I unlock my phone several times a day (too often to be honest), so I can't forget the things that are written on my background even if I want to.
@miillktea
I do the same! or for me I write down when I feel intense emotion or when I'm inspired to do some free-writing haha. I feel like if I don't write it I'll never capture the emotion and that moment again.
Yeah, me too!
I love writing down what happened in the day so I can keep the memory alive.
@miillktea That's how I am! I can remember doctor's appointments in the future or future things I have to get done, but I can remember what I got out of bed to do 😂 I hate that nagging feeling when you are trying to remember something!
Oh yeah!
I can also remember things like that from the past pretty well 😂 somehow I'm able to remember random appointments I had in the past or when exactly I bought my last guitar strings but if you ask me about random days I've spend in-between? Barely existent.
We're about to celebrate a birthday of a family member in a few days and I've spend the whole morning wondering when I myself got this old because I'm pretty sure I just aged 3 years in 4 month.
I really want to work more on my short term memory and the whole "living in the moment" thing so I maybe won't be taken this aback the next time I'm realizing my own age!
@miillktea
I can relate to this! I am also currently working on being more in the present moment. I feel the time is running too fast and when someone asks me how old I am I still think I am a year younger haha.
Yeah!
I sometimes really have to force myself to get back into the present moment. Even when I'm actually sitting down to drink a coffee in the sunshine I sometimes need to tell myself "stay in the moment" to realize the moment is happening. But it does get easier with each time, haha.
@fruityPond7887
I totally get you. That brain fog just seems like you're spectating your day as it goes by not really able to take initiative to get things done. I'm sure meditation can definitely help you feel "in the moment" and in control to clear up some of that brain fog!
@sunnyWriting4806 I agree! I definitely just seem to get through my day without much reflection and it's just work, eat, sleep, repeat. I need something that will really help me decompress and not just sleep to sleep but to feel rested.
I will definitely read more about different forms of meditation and their neurocognitive effects! It is so fascinating
What are some ways that help you not forget something?
I usually set alarm reminders because I get immersed in activity easily and then I would forget about other things I need to do.
@globalBraid3744
The classic alarm reminders are simple and good ways to keep in track of things to do! But sometimes I forget to set the reminder haha! So I sometimes let things slip through without me thinking about it.
@sunnyWriting4806
haha, I get the struggle! I usually first note it down in my calendar and when I forget, then I also do not set the reminder. Fortunately, I am not doing it almost automatically now so it rarely happens that I forget.
