“If you could think of an answer within 5 seconds — congratulations!

If not, it’s time to think why?

As we grow up, we get into a state of inertia with regard to learning new things. There could be multiple reasons for it.

  • We spend our free time binge-watching or scrolling social media

  • Poor work-life balance

  • Family commitments and responsibilities

  • No immediate tangible benefits coming out of it

When we start learning something new, it takes time and practice to get better at it, and we don’t have the patience for it

But one should keep learning new things. It could be something as small as learning how to use chopsticks or as big as learning a new language.

Learning new things adds to your personality. It makes you more interesting and confident. It helps you find common topics when you meet new people. It gives you a sense of achievement.

A side hustle idea may also emerge for you when you explore new things. It would help in uncertain periods like we are going through now with layoffs happening even in big tech companies.

So, how do you learn new things?

  • Make a list of all the things you want to learn. Start picking them one by one.

  • Start with learning the basics. You don’t have to master it on day 1.

  • Be patient and consistent.

  • Learn new things with family and friends. It would serve as a fun bonding activity and you’ll all gain new skills. For example — swimming, yoga, art, cooking, the list can go on.

If you don’t have the time to learn offline then you can find online workshops/courses.

Learning is a lifelong process.” — Peter Drucker”

Takeaway: We develop an indifference toward learning new things as we become older. There might be a number of reasons for this such as getting busier. However, it’s good to continue learning new things as we get older. Reflect and think back on something you would like to learn and try to get started!

Reflection: What is something new you would like to learn?
