Zen and The Importance of Hobbies
“Zen is “a state of calm attentiveness in which one’s actions are guided by intuition rather than conscious effort.” Everyone’s route to Zen is different.
For many, it might be watching a movie, reading poetry, a novel, or writing. What is vitally important is that the activity demands your full participation and detours you away from the monkey mind. “According to Buddhist principles, the ‘monkey mind’ is a term that refers to being unsettled, restless, or confused.” It is also sometimes referred to as our “inner critic.”
“It’s (the monkey mind) the part of your brain most connected to the ego, which contends that you can’t do anything right. It’s also the part of you that stifles creativity and prevents you from moving forward with your passions. “
Herein lies the key. Each of us must seek our passions and pursue them. To do otherwise is to ignore our genuine selves. This is not to say we should choose to become a monk and live a life of celibacy on top of a mountain, although for a few individuals, this may be their path. For most of us, there must be a balance between work and play. And play is the key to escaping the confused and hurtful monkey mind.”

Doing one thing at a time, and paying full attention to it.
Noticing distractions, and coming back.
Listening to music in this way is a great "zen-like" practice for me.
But it can be applied to anything: walking, washing the dishes, cleaning the floor...
And Active Listening of course!
One thing at a time, full focus, and coming back from distractions is the "way of the monk".
Meditation Is its ultimate expression, and the "mind gym" to train this way of life.
To anyone interested in this topic, I recommend the book "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind", by Shunryu Suzuki Full audiobook (great reading by Peter Coyote) on YouTube: https://youtu.be/vjpXPECBi5o
