What have you learnt in your life so far, from which the world can benefit?
Lin: In my life so far, I have learned one of the most valuable lessons - the importance of building a strong network. As the saying goes, "your network is your net worth," and I have found this to be true time and time again.
I was fortunate to be a Specialist High Skills Major student in high school with a focus on business. My teachers from this program taught me to start meaningful conversations with others in the same industry or field of work, whether formally or through volunteering. I believe that the more people who know you, the more opportunities that come your way.
However, it's important not to market yourself just for the sake of an opportunity. Superficial relationships often don’t yield the results you’re seeking. I believe that starting meaningful conversations, expressing a desire to learn, and seeking feedback to grow is key to building trust and earning opportunities organically.
Ultimately, I strongly believe that regardless of what we are trying to accomplish, the power of a strong network and connecting with others should not be underestimated. By sharing ideas and resources and working together, rather than against each other, we can make a bigger impact than working alone.
2. What work gives you a sense of purpose?
To me, work that gives me a sense of purpose is one that allows me to contribute to the community while utilizing my strengths and skill set. Whether it's through volunteering or working for a business corporation, I find it gratifying when I can use my abilities to make a positive impact on others.
Specifically, I have found that work related to teaching or mentoring is particularly rewarding for me. Having accumulated over 300 volunteer hours working in summer camps with children aged 5 to 13, I have also taken on several mentor roles in real life. Moreover, I am currently a Group Support Academy Program (GSP) mentor here on 7Cups, which reflects my strong commitment to this value.
On the other hand, I have a diverse set of skills, ranging from soft skills such as conflict resolution and leadership, to technical skills such as market research and analysis, as well as visual design. I am also passionate about advocating for people struggling with mental health. As a listener on 7Cups, I find it especially rewarding to utilize my de-escalation skills in chat rooms.
3. What do you hope to achieve in the next one year?
In the next year, I have both realistic and daydream goals that I hope to achieve. My realistic goal here on 7Cups is to reach the Chatroom Mentor (CRM) role. I’ve been actively hanging out in listener chatrooms and I believe I’m ready to take on that next step to further help out within this realm and make a bigger impact in the community. As for my daydream goal, it would be to become a community moderator (com mod) one day. I truly do enjoy moderation and de-escalation, as well as passionate about support those struggling with mental health.
Beyond 7Cups, I also have a few personal goals in mind. I plan to set up more streams of passive income to diversify my portfolio and improve my financial stability. Additionally, I want to get back into content creation in the creative realm, particularly in digital arts. Lastly, I aim to further my knowledge in coding to enhance my professional profile and explore new opportunities.
4. What have been your learnings as a listener?
As a listener, I have learned many valuable lessons throughout my journey. One of the most important things I learned is that asking questions never comes off as annoying. Leaders you admire today all once started off where you were, by asking questions and gathering knowledge. It is also important to believe in yourself and not let self-sabotaging thoughts hold you back from achieving your full potential. In this welcoming environment, you are often harder on yourself than leaders will ever be on you.
5. Generally speaking, how does one make the best out of 7cups?
To make the best out of 7cups, here are some tips that can be helpful:
Connect with a listener coach for mentorship to learn and grow in your role.
Complete the training modules available in your dashboard to gain a deeper understanding of active listening and communication skills.
Take the four Active Listening tests to improve your listening skills and increase your chances of being promoted to higher roles.
Participate in the Group Support Academy Program, which offers a LinkedIn recommendation upon completion and helps improve your leadership skills.
-
Identify the areas of 7cups that you enjoy the most and focus on those areas to make the most impact and find greater satisfaction in your work.
6. Which area of 7cups (could be a chatroom, a forum, or any aspect of 7cups) do you want to especially engage more in?
When it comes to 7Cups, I am interested in engaging more with chatrooms outside of the listener chatrooms and newbie hub rooms on the adult side. As a global moderator, it's important for me to be flexible and respond to issues that arise in a variety of rooms. Building connections and rapport with regulars is crucial for effective moderation, so I plan to spend more time in these rooms to get to know the community better.
In addition to chatrooms, I would also like to explore the forums more and see how they can be utilized to promote specific projects or sub-communities. Although it's an area I've avoided for the past two years, I am willing to experiment with it and see what works. Realistically, I may not be able to focus on this until July, as it could be time-consuming, but I believe it's worth exploring to better serve the 7Cups community.
