Suicide Prevention Week!
Hi there community! Last Sunday it was Suicide Prevention Day and through the week it got me thinking about it a lot. Some of us have struggled with suicidal thoughs at some point of our lives, many of us have been impacted by suidice in one way or another. I know it can . be in incredibly sensitive topic and I would not push any of you to talk about it if you cannot feel emotionally ready to handle it, but I must urge you to think and talk about it if possible for you because it matters.
Talking about suicide prevention can be awkward, hard and uncomfortable but we have to do it. If we don't confront this issue we will keep loosing valuable and loved people to it. If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts please consider reaching out finding the right resource for you here (if you are a teen here). If you are not personally struggle with this, I urge you to be kind to those around you and be willing to support anyone that might need a compassionate pair of ears.
Why talking about suicide prevention matters?
"Suicide is not chosen; it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain." -taken from here.
The best way to treat an issue is to adress the "real problem" or the cause of said issue. The reason we can't cause any real change to the suicide rates without setting up a preventive mechanism, is because suicide is not the problem; its the solution. A very hurtful and permanent one. Preventing people from getting to their breaking point will be more efective.

How does 7 cups impact suicide prevention?
7 Cups focuses on offering emotional support to anyone that might need a listening ear. 7 Cups is meant to be a place that provides coping skills and resources for people on how to manage their pain. In doing that, we are helping people be better prepared to deal with the on going struggles of life and avoid "tipping" their pain scale onto an unbareable position.
Why our work here matters?
What we are doing here is amazing. Every day we are giving tons of users the ability to face their pain. We are giving them support and compassion to keep going forward. We are giving them the tools they need to fight agaisnt their suicidal thoughts, if or when necesary.
The work each and every one of you is doing here takes us one step closer to preventing suicide. Every compliment you give in the forums or in group support, every nice message you send in PM, every heart you give someone, every minute you offer to listen, support or even share here should be and is meant to be about building a culture of healing. The time you invest here isnt just about giving support and getting support; its about building a kinder, more compassionate and supportive world for everyone.
Lastly I want to invite you to think about why suicide prevention matters and share your reason below!
Suicide prevention matters because people matter. Every single person is so valuable and many times the weight of struggles can make that person feel shrouded, that they don't see anything but this option. But in trying to prevent it, to show people their worth and their value and how things can get better, it can open up that shroud just a little, enough for some light to shine in.
For me, it is important because I've already lost family to suicide. I've lost friends to suicide. I've almost lost myself to it as well. If only there were more resources, less taboo around the topic...maybe those people I love so so much would still be here. But they're not. And all I can hope is that future people don't have to go through the same loss. Suicide is so preventable. There's so many other options out there when things get to that point. It's important that people know and have access to them. It's not enough to look back after someone has taken their life and think about all the things you wish you had said to them...you have people around you right now, say it now
@Iara
Exactly i completely agree. People tend to find simpler way outs to escape from trouble and end up on suicide. They don't even think wisely before taking such an extreme step....
@Iara
suicide prevention is extremely important because with a lot of help and love people can get back a life. Noone should be left without help when struggling and particularly not when they cannot cope anymore. We all need to support each other.
I fear to talk about it because of the reaction I get from others. I think about it. I have friends who have thought about it or have done it. This is a topic that is very hard for a lot of people but I am really glad that it is being talked about now. Thank you.
Suicide that word is more taboo then cussing In church but it is important to talk about I have had suicidal thoughts for a over 10 years and have not been able to find anyone to help because people don't want to think about it. I work as a 911dispatcher and have spoken with and saved several people that wanted to kill themselves... I have also been on the phone when they did it it is not pleasing thing and one thing I have come to realize is that it is the lack of help that leads to suicide being the "solution" for the pain
@Tiredandalone88
Yeah, people don't take it seriously until people want to do it, but we should be helping them before that happens because it happens too much.
Suicide prevention matters because the person who is suicidal may not be thinking clearly or rationally. Having someone to talk to and actually listen and maybe sometimes offer suggestions on how to move forward can sometimes save a life. It's got to be hard to be a support listener and hear all the negatives all the time and still offer encouragement, empathy and compassion. These supporters deserve a special place in heaven for all that they do!!!
@Iara This was needed. Thank you.
This past year I have been struggling with Suicidal thoughts, and my parents found out. I would not like to say the way they did, but they did. They are now babying me and they won't let me do anything on my own. They are just making it worse.
@xXPlasticSmileXx
I had the same thing happen, they are afraid of loosing you and doing whatever they can for it to not happen again. They might be bewildered, and can't figure out what they did as parents to have you end up doing that. They might not realize it's not their fault. They might not realize, it most likely would not happen again. It will take them time to be okay with what happened. It took my parents a few years. They love you lots, that's why. They don't want to loose you.
Because people matter!! ❤
It matters because you neved know who is feeling that way. Specially those who have chronic pain..ive been there before. But i use my thoughts of that to help me relate to people who feel that way. Ive helped 16 people stop self harm or keep from killing themselves.
I think about it every single day, a way out of my hell, the abuse, the verbal threats of violence. I honestly hate myself because I know I'm a loser and will never recover. Life has never been good for me. I've been mistreated, abused, threatened and hated. The one person I truly love, I would love to hurt and bring pain to. I'm alive but not living. I've attempted it about four times, remember being brought back once. I hate every single thing about my ugly, disgusting self. I've never, ever had anyone to really care about me, for real. Life is all fake.
@Sb145

@CavitBilen Thank you. I just wished I could find my safe place.
