Unpopular Literary Opinions

What are your unpopular literary opinions? No judgement here <3

One of mine is: I'm not a fan of the idea of kids being taught things like Shakespeare in schools. They're complicated and hard to read, and no wonder kids hate reading when things like this are what they're made to read. They should be given the option to choose their own books and read at their own pace, not having to read at the same pace as everyone else.

Also, books with almost no dialogue bore me. That's why I've never been a fan of books like White Fang or My Side of the Mountain. Too much description, not enough dialogue and action.

@jesusredeemedme2425

I think you have got a point here 😊 👍

I guess I am from the opposite side of the planet, and finished my last school 20+ years ago, but I am afraid some of the rules are the still the same:

The books on the obligatory readings lists are usually too old. They are completely irrelevant to the current realities and tempo of living. Use annoying, lengthy, old language.

Descriptions - I cannot agree more. When a brave sheriff comes in, the colour of the laces in his shoes should not be important, but the way he walks, how he speaks out, what are his thoughts.

Poetry - is often completely unrelatable to the experiences of the young people who read it. That is why they are often discouraged from reading (and writing) poetry for the rest of their lives.

The problem with the classical literature in my country (during over 1000 years of our history, due to our unfavorable location, we were invaded and occupied many times) is the fact it is often dull and very depressing, too much concentrated on martyrdom and suffering, usually with no positive thoughts.

I think the school curricula should be more about the literature of the late 19th and 20th Century, not earlier. Some scholars would definitely say "but this our heritage!". Yes, but our heritage is also running barefoot, dressed in mammoth skin without underwear, dirty, unshaved, carrying a club - and somehow we are not doing that 😉

I agree about Shakespeare. In my personal view one of the worst things in our domestic literature is Polish/Lithuanian poet Adam Mickiewicz (his poems are as difficult to get through as his surname to pronounce for a foreigner 😉).

The best things that happened to me at school were works of e.g. Ernest Hemingway, H.G. Wells, Karel Capek, Jack London (but not "White Fang"), Jules Verne, Mark Twain, Charles May or world-famous Polish Sci-Fi writer Stanisław Lem.

@jacek73 your woolly-mammoth analogy here is startlingly en-pointe, jacek! Fully agree with you here. On everything you've said.

@jesusredeemedme2425

I agree, kids should only have to go at their own pace, and reading should be fun and not forced!

Is it mad though, I loved Shakespeare, the eternal nerd in me 😁🥰

@jesusredeemedme2425

That poetry must be long and of a certain genre to be considered poetry and interesting.
