If I had to give a small lecture, I think I would make it about genetic counseling! Genetic counseling is the field that I am hoping I will end up in! It's a growing field, but I think it's a really promising one! Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals that help patients throughout the process of testing and diagnosis of a genetic disease. For example, breast cancer patients see genetic counselors pretty frequently. If someone has a high family risk of breast cancer, a genetic counselor will sit down with a patient, take a family history, discuss testing options, see if the patient would like to pursue testing, order the test if applicable, discuss the results with the patient and help discuss further steps, like more frequent screenings!
