River and Lili

River didn’t like people.

Crowds felt loud. Voices felt sharp. Even standing too close to someone made their chest tighten. When people tried to high-five or pat their shoulder, River would flinch before they could stop themself. Most people stopped trying after a while. River figured it was easier that way.

Then they met Lili.

Lili was the kind of person who talked to stray cats, waved at babies in grocery carts, and said “thank you” to bus drivers every single time. The first time she sat next to River, she didn’t try to touch them or ask a million questions. She just smiled and said, “You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. I just like sitting here.”

That was new.

Days turned into weeks. Lili would ramble about clouds that looked like animals or shows she was watching, and River would listen. Sometimes River answered with one word. Sometimes just a nod. Lili never pushed for more.

One afternoon, while they were doing homework together, Lili paused. “Hey,” she said softly, keeping her hands in her lap, “is it okay if I sit a little closer? If not, that’s totally fine.”

No one had ever asked River that before.

River hesitated… then gave a small nod. Lili moved just a few inches closer, leaving plenty of space. River’s heart still raced, but it didn’t feel as scary. It felt… careful. Safe.

Being with Lili didn’t magically fix everything. Some days were still hard. Some days River needed space, quiet, and zero contact. Lili learned the signs and never took it personally. And little by little, River learned that not everyone wanted to hurt them. Some people listened. Some people waited. Some people cared.

One day, River reached out first — just their pinky finger brushing against Lili’s sleeve for a second.

Lili noticed. She smiled, warm and gentle, like always.

And for the first time, River didn’t feel like the world was only something to survive.

It felt like something they might actually be able to live in.
