22 year marriage is over
Last week, I told my wife of 22 years that we should separate. It’s been coming since September last year and has finally come to a head now. We both know it’s the right thing to do but we have both been avoiding the obvious. Looking back, maybe we shouldn’t have gotten married in the first place. We both have baggage. But now, I feel like I’m shell shocked. Just numb. It’s my first and only marriage, and even when I had relationships break up in the past, it was never me that pulled the plug. She is working on finding a place to move and I am also looking for somewhere to move. I’ll stay here in the town we are in now and she will move back to another state to be with family. I’ve never had much outside support and right now, I’m especially feeling alone. I believe this will pass, but my world sucks right now…

Thank you for sharing. I'm impressed and proud of you. I am thinking about having this conversation in the coming weeks about my 15+ year marriage, and I know how difficult it is to start. I am looking forward to living alone again - I remember it so fondly from an earlier point in life, and I know that I am only more stable and able to provide for myself than I was then. I have learned many lessons about myself in the time together.
I am glad to hear from you, and you give me encouragement to have difficult conversations where I fear so much bitterness. You give me reason to believe that I know you are right that it will get better. Think of the peace and safety of escaping the challenges and suffering that you have known for so long.
You are safe here. I am glad you are here, and this is always a good place to share.
Best wishes.
@RAJ484 I know the feeling as I have gone through it. It is a life changing experience that has the ingredients to redefine who you are in a good way.
