Breakup but it's been 5 years

I just don't know how to start this, but in short, here's the story: We remained friends, but I couldn't contain my feelings and confessed my love for him. I have accepted the fact that he will always see me as the immature and crazy girl he met five years ago. Back in October, he was interested in giving it a try, but at the same time, he felt unsure. I told him that we probably wouldn't work out because I was certain I wanted to be with him, but he wasn't. So, it's probably better if we didn't get back together. However, I regret it so much. I can't do anything about it, but the pain is unbearable. We haven't talked for two days because I messed up by saying "I love you," and I feel awful. I lost my friend, and it just hurts too much. I know I may seem foolish for staying, but before our relationship became complicated, transitioning from being friends to a boyfriend and then a weird situationship, we were friends. I miss him as my friend but I couldn't stop falling in love.

@practicat I understand how you feel - you know what they say, being friends with someone you are in love with is a treacherous feat. I am riding the waves of sadness with you, it’s quite unbearable and the taste of regret after what could’ve been, if you went a different route, can be overwhelming. It is so invalidating when you are advised to simply move on. You can’t help who your heart longs for. I wish you the best on your healing journey, and hope that they cards are in your favor… the fact that you both have a connection going after five years is telling of how strong your bond is.
