How to get over someone?

Hi, so me and my boyfriend split up nearly a year ago. We was living together and everything was happy. But then we started to argue quite often but our arguments was over silly petty things that didn't matter. We had bigger issues in our relationship but my ex boyfriend isn't able to communicate and would rather ignore the situation so whenever I tried to bring it up, he would say there was no problems and avoid talking about it which ended up with us constantly having petty arguments. We had the biggest argument and in the heat of the moment, we both decided to mutually split. He went back home to his parents and didn't return for three days. I tried to sit him down and talk about things properly even if we didn't fix the relationship, at least talk about what went wrong and if we could do anything to make the relationship work but he point blank refused and said he didn't have anything left to say to me. As none of us had money to move out and due to our jobs being 3 hours away from our home town, we decided to stay together with one on the sofa until one of us moved out. He ignored me for 6 weeks and every single time he had a day off, he would get up early and not return back until late at night and was usually drunk. He watched and heard me cry myself to sleep and refused to talk to me at all. I went away on holiday for two weeks and when I returned he started talking to me, running me baths and not letting me get up to make food or drinks. I asked him why the sudden change as it's unfair on me and he said he was just being friendly. He then went back to ignoring me. He also said he was no longer in love with me but he didn't know when it happened or when he realised. When I left the flat in August, we did sit down and talk and he said he's gonna miss me and he apologised for being stubborn. He also sent me a message later on saying he's still in love with me, always has and always will be. I've left a hole in his heart that will never be replaced. He wishes he could go back in time and not be as stubborn. He also said he understands why I don't want to fix things anymore and there's nothing he can do as we now live in separate towns that aren't even close to each other. Although I never told him I never wanted to sort things so he really confused me. It's now been nearly a year since we split and 6 months since I left the flat. I still cry and I still think about him all the time. I don't know if I'm angry at him for not wanting to fix things or try and confuse me. But I just want to know when will it get easier and when will I stop crying? Because it's got to the point when I'm trying to date, I know I'm not ready or I'm looking for the the same qualities as my ex boyfriend and my friends keep telling me I should be over him by now.
