Long distance mess

I knew this guy for a year before we started a long distance relationship. It was codependent and messy. Going into it, he had trouble telling people about us and, in that vein, seeing me because it meant telling his family. I lied to our only other mutual friend about having a seperate boyfriend and even quit talking to him because it made my ex uncomfortable. I felt bad lying for so long, its not me. I broke up with him because he said that he didnt know if he could see me, the relationship wasn't real so he couldn't tell people about us. The break up was messy, I caved and tried to make things work because we were codependent but you know how it goes. Our friend was asking me what was going on and I had to lie to him. A month after the break up I told my ex that I didn't want to lie anymore because it was really heavy for me. He dismissed what I was saying, saying there was no reason to lie and that he trusted me not to tell our friend. I ended up telling our friend the next day and my ex completely removed me from everything over it. Was I in the wrong? I hurt him a lot with that. Since then it's like I just can't let go and think clearly.

@RenAnaph No, in this situation, I think you are absolutely right. If he didn't want to tell anyone about you, then you were probably convenient for him only on the Internet, and nothing more. So there is no need to worry too much. It is easy to say, harder to do. But he seems like an ordinary manipulator and egoist. You shouldn't have any relationship with such people, to be honest.
