Mutual friends with your ex

Hi there! I need some advice!

My partner broke up with me 2 weeks ago asking for a clean break. We have not contacted each other at all but I am friends with one of his friends girlfriends and I asked her to let me know about him for me as I can’t ask him myself. I asked her to do this as I still care about him and I want him back so if he does something that shows he has no intention of getting back together with me I’d rather find that out now rather than keep on thinking there’s a chance if there’s not. I asked her to not telling anyone I want to know know about him because I’m worried that will look bad but I don’t really trust that she will keep that promise as she tells her partner everything!! Have I made a big mistake?
