My wife left me suddenly

I’m not really sure where to start. My wife of three years left me suddenly recently. She’d been spending more and more time with her sister and didn’t seem really interested in spending time with me. I told her I was feeling unloved and her response was “I can’t give you what you want”. She walked out and went to a party with her sister and I didn’t hear from her for 24 hours. When she came home she told me she’d been up all night talking to another guy who “just gets her”. She told me I needed to fix a bunch of things to make the marriage work and I tried to show her I would do anything she asked. Then she told me I was trying too hard, all the while she was going out to her sisters house and spending time with this guy who gets her. Next minute she invited me to a park and said she doesn’t love me and she wants every day to be about herself.
Three weeks before this we were sitting in the doctors talking about how to get prepared to have a baby. We had baby names and everything. She seemed to just change the night she went to the party. When she came back her mannerisms were different, her desires, her interests. She was like a completely different person inhabiting my wife’s body.

While I’ve sought to try and understand how my life could just fall apart so suddenly I’ve had a lot of people tell me she might have NPD which is why she behaved the way she did. I guess I’m having a hard time understanding what that means and if it could be true. Either way it doesn’t make it any easier. All I do now is look back at every tiny thing I did wrong and wholly blame myself for ruining my marriage and driving her away. It’s been six months and I’m still dreaming of her every night and thinking of her every day. I’ve tried everything I can to get past this, therapy, exercise, meditation, medication, talking to friends, dating other people, but nothing works. I miss her every day and just want to curl up and cry all the time.

I’m sorry. You don’t deserve this. I honestly think she’s a really shit person I know you probably won’t see it my way but gawd damn. I don’t think she loved you because you don’t treat someone you love like that. I’ve had someone break up with me like that. It sucks I spent years hurt but I stopped feeling sorry for myself instead I realized it was their loss I’m fucking amazing! I didn’t really date much but I had dates here and there. Eventually I said fuck this and spoke to one of my friends and we both wanted to settle down and had ideas of what roles we would be. I’m a homemaker/housewife, my duties my life is my husband and kids. I think the fact we were friends with crushes on each other for years helped. I honestly love him on good days and bad. Not sure if its the same on his end but it’s what it is. When you love someone you do everything you can and your heart feels like it’s legit broken and all’s you want to do is curl up in a dark place when the love isn’t shown back. Maybe it wasn’t meant to be. I would focus on healthy hobbies eventually try and talk to other people and date

Thank you for saying that. I think like you I am probably facing a years long battle to recover. My therapist, friends and family keep trying to illustrate to me that her bad behaviours led to the end of the relationship but I can’t see it. I just feel so responsible. She was so cold and robotic to me at the end. The woman who id been excitedly choosing baby names with just before she left. She’d been slowly getting things together for a nursery. I just don’t understand how she could change overnight just because I asked to spend time with me instead of her sister for once

Wow... she does sound like she’s got NPD. There’s better out there. A person with NPD is not good for your health. I hope you can find clarity soon.

What is it that makes you think she has NPD? People keep saying this to me but I don’t fully understand. Is it the ability to change personality overnight?

She lacks empathy. She’s more focused on herself, typically seeing that she’s superior than people around her. Feel free to reach out to me if you would like to talk. :)
