Now I'm just confused. No idea what to do.

Let me say from that divorcing is probably the best thing we can do. It still makes perfect, logical sense.

But ....

Economic realities are that we still under the same roof until we sell the house. This has forced us to communicate better than we have for years. This has forced us to recognize each other's life as something independent of the relationship. This has forced us to think more about what "doing our fair share" looks like. This has forced us to agree a schedule for "me time", "chores time" and "time with mr5 yo". This has forced us to take better advantage of each of these "times".

If we'd done this before, we wouldn't be in this situation and looking to divorce.

But ...

i really don't want to pretend all the problems have been solved. I really don't want to call off the separation only to be back in this same situation in a couple of years. (This has been our experience with counseling, etc over a loooooong period.)

I'm really confused.

@TheSleech

I am 52. My wife is 51. We have a 9-year old son and a 13-year old daughter. My wife is addicted to the internet. It's so bad that my daughter knows to come to me when she is out of "girl products".

I have almost no communications with my wife-- none. She will ask a question and I'll ignore her. She'll be talking about work, and I walk out of the room.

It's one thing to have ignored me, I'm a big boy and deal with it, but putting my children in that position is a type of abuse. I never bring it up with my children, but recently my daughter has been complaining and I tell her that her mother has a mental illness.

I have tried to get her to go to couples therapy. We went three (3) times. I calmly recounted very recent events, just things that happened and were undisputed by my wife. I would then be silent and give my wife an opportunity to speak without any type of interruption either verbally or even non-verbally. I felt this was a way particular issues could be addressed without her feeling 'picked on' or even that she is unintentionally hurting my feelings. The therapist never had an issue with what I said, nor how I said it; it was very matter of fact and without any emotional 'charge' just things that occurred. I listened to every word my wife said and when she stopped talking I made sure that she knew that I knew exactly what she had said. After three (3) visits, my wife refused to go any longer.

I suggested that she might want to go to individual counseling and she refused.

I do the groceries, cooking, cleaning, and laundry. I get the children's lunches and clothing laid out the night before in order to assist the mornings going smoothly. I never do any housework or even paying bills while the children are awake. It is my belief that they deserve my complete attention seconds after they want it.

My wife, obviously, sees there is a problem but thinks it is me (what exactly I'm not sure). I know she is upset that she has to work, but she chose where we would live; there are virtually no single income families. Actually, she only started working full time it will be two years this July.

I have given up on my wife. I do need her to physically be here to get my son off to school and her salary. There is no confusion for me. My wife chose the computer and her Second Life friends over her own children and her husband. That is her choice. I do whatever I can for my children.

Sometimes things just don't work out, yet you have to stay together for financial reasons. None of my Life Insurance would go to my wife. None of the money my mother has will go to my children. Anything that can possibly be put in my name and my children's is. We have a small joint checking account to pay bills. Other than that, when the children are of age, I will cut all ties. She had choices-- and she chose.

@JeffWM

You have a lot on your plate trying to compensate for your wife's addiction and keep your kids the priority. I'm sorry you are going through this. Relationships have many layers, trying to peel them away to get to the root of a problem can be overwhelming and confusing, especially if bitterness has crept in.

Relationships are tough. But there is always hope! Best wishes for your family.

@JeffWM Wow. I really don't know what to say. Hang in there. You've got a plan. Trust in the process. You'll come out the other side.
