Parent troubles caused a wall between us..
Hello, so recently in the past two weeks the guy I was with for over a year asked to go back to being friends because he felt overwhelmed with my parents not wanting us to be together. I understand that he has feelings and I want to be able to be there for him but he is the kind of guy that won’t talk about feelings at all with me. He said he still loves me but it’s just this thing with my parents and his parents (now) that is stopping us. Should we stop talking so we can have the space? If so, for how long?

Hi guest! I think this is a pretty good question and it's also a current society problem that a lot of people are facing. There is no technically an absolute right or wrong, but I'll just give you my opinion on this problem. To begin, I saw research about the percentage of people who would still choose to be together even with the disagreement of their parents. The result shocked me, 80 percent of them would choose to stay together, and 75 percent of them regret their choice in the future. Marriage is not only about you and him, it's about your whole family and his whole family. Your parents are looking at the reality side of your relationship, while you guys are on the love side of your relationship. A relationship without the support of family means that you have to face all the challenges and struggle by yourself. It's all you, all yourself. I understand that you and he love each other a lot, but if you want a healthy relationship, you need an agreement. They are the ones who are standing beside, looking at the whole picture, and who experienced marriage. However, it's still not impossible for you guys to stay together. Talk to your parents full of respect and think from their perspective. They raised you till your age, be respectful, a relationship without agreement is a risk that you don't want to experience. Last but not least, show them that he has the ability to give you a good life, show them that he's making you happy. Don't just tell them, prove to them. Good luck.
