Regrets and guilt

Hi so I took a break from my 5 year long relationship as me and my boyfriend were having arguments and conflicts. So it was his birthday the other day and I did call him up to wish him and texted him. But he wanted to meet me and so did I but I didn't call him the whole day. And birthdays were really special for us all along. We used to celebrate it amazingly. Now I feel really bad but I think I did that for the both of us but why do I feel guilty now. He texted me later that he's hurt I couldn't help but cry after reading that. And I feel so sad now I fee like I should have done something or meet him at least.
