Verbal Abuse, Ready to Divorce, He Has No Income or Place to Go

Ive been in a verbally abusive marriage for 8+ years. We have a daughter (10). He struggles with childhood trauma and a workplace incident. I became the sole income 6 years ago. He never tried to find a different career path and let the PTSD define him. He attempted to homeschool our daughter which he couldnt do (I had to step in).

Over the last year our marriage has declined. Nothing I can do is right. I went so far as to move to Mexico for two years (I work remotely). Hes now controlling about my daughter and I even talking about or visiting family in FL (we left Mexico 3 months ago and live out West now). He accuses me of being too high functioning and that he cant keep up with me. (The job I have is very stressful but sure does allow him a comfortable life). Weve brought up separating but a few days later he proceeds like we will be okay. I have no desire to continue - his verbal abuse has done too much damage.

At issue is, his family in FL is highly dysfunctional and have no way to help him financially. He also suffers severe allergies there - he accused me of returning from FL last week and carrying pollen back on the suitcase, which made him break out in a rash and that I am trying to kill him. He refuses therapy and says my stress isnt allowing him to heal.

I can give him a bit of money to get by but its not enough to set up a place. (I believe he can work but says the PTSD is too bad and he will just snap). He will not be able to give child support, but yet I fear having to pay alimony.

I want him out, his daily outbursts are interfering with my job and daughters schooling and I dont want the abuse to turn physical. Suggestions on what to do? I fear hed just slump into his own world and just give up. At the end of the day, this is my daughters father - Im not trying to be malicious but she and I have suffered enough. TIA.

@iwilltriomphe8

Hi there,

Sorry to read about your shitty situation and my sympathies to you all. I don't think there's much anyone can say that could really help you - you are obviously an intelligent and proactive person. My only advice would be to get legal advice on where you would stand with regards to alimony and the likes.

It seems as though he needs to have his crutch taken away if he's ever going to do anything with his life.

Just out of interest, how is the relationship between your daughter and him? You mentioned that he is controlling. How does she feel about him? Do you think she'll readily cope should you divorce and/or physically live in potentially different parts of the country

I'm sorry I'm unable to offer anymore practical or useful input.

Good luck
