there was this guy i was talking to around last september to late november. during our time together we sometimes disagreed on things, made each other uncomfortable with our jokes, and things along the lines of that. but when that would happen, we usually would talk to each other about it and then apologize and promise to be more open. well while we were talking i thought i was lesbian so i told him that and that i was happy we were able to talk. then about a few weeks later i thought i was simply just overthinking it and wasn’t actually lesbian, so i told him that i missed and loved him. but then the next morning i told him it was probably just platonic. i felt extremely bad because i made stupid decisions, and we talked to each other about it and he voiced his opinion and said he was hurt by it and that it really messed with him. so we came to the conclusion that i would think of my sexuality and that if i felt anything towards him, i would tell him and we would just continue being friends. in short, we just decided to stay friends. but THEN, he texted me one day and said i was rubbing it in his face because i would always talk about how hot kpop or anime girls were in front of him, but genuinely i am like that with a lot of people, and i told him that. but i also told him i would start being more considerate and pipe down on that because i genuinely could see how it would upset him. he then asked me how my feelings just disappeared and i told him it was mainly because of a lot of confusion and that while we did talk that i truly did love him and it’s true, i did really love him. he asked if he did something bad to make my feelings go away, and i said that hes made insensitive jokes, he did apologize for them but then repeated himself when he did something i found offensive towards black people (i am black), he kept saying it wasnt racially motivated but i really thought it was, and i expressed to him that even if it wasnt racially motivated that the joke he did could be taken in that context because of the stereotypes for black people. and the whole argument spiraled out of control. we apologized to each other the next morning for that whole argument and thats where we really kind of stopped talking a little. fast forward to now, my mom brought up how my dad was an emotional manipulator and i did a mental check to see if i had done that and i thought of our relationship, and asked the guy if he felt like i emotionally manipulated him, and he said “at times.” and i started to apologize and he said that it was fine and he’s moved on since then. am i a bad person? what should i do?

One question is easy to answer … you are not a bad person. You are trying to figure things out, and be thoughtful along the way. I understand that it is difficult. That is true and real and not your fault.

You are not manipulative in your story - there is no point where you are reacting or interacting in ways with the intent to influence the other person. No one can externally tell if you are manipulating. That comes from within you. That is something you can tell about yourself. Your intentions _do_ matter.

It is confusing, and that is understandable. You are at a confusing point. It will not always be this way. For now it is probably good to tell anyone that you feel strongly about that you are going through a confusing time, and you have strong feelings, but you're not sure what they mean or what you want to do about them.

You are a good person, and you are thinking carefully about what is good for you and how to be careful with others. These are all good and will help. You might want to include a disclaimer up front - saying that you're doing through a confusing time as I said above. Aside from that, keep being you, keep thinking, and keep feeling.
