Can't get a girlfriend. Why?

April 25th, 2016

This has been stressing me out a lot lately. I'm a freshman in high school and it seems like people all around me, friends or otherwise, suddenly have boyfriends and girlfriends, like there was something I missed that everyone else got. And everyone seems to have gotten into relationships so casually, like it just happened one day, and it makes me really frustrated.

I know that I'm quiet and going up to a girl I'm attracted to is terrifying to me, but it makes me worry that there's something about me that repels girls. Maybe something about how I look, or my voice, or how I dress, or the way I sit, or the stuff I talk about when I do talk. Something that left me out of the loop, so to speak. I do have some friends that are girls but none of those friendships are more than casual (I've only lived where I live now for about 2 years).

Does anyone have any tips? Is there something I'm doing wrong? Since not many girls really know me too well, could there be something obvious about the way I look/act that makes them uninterested in me? Any input helps.

Hello,

Sorry to hear that you're going through this difficulty! I feel that the right people come into our lives, who were meant to be there...and that you will truly find that special person to date. It may come soon, it may come later, but I believe that if it's meant to be, it will happen naturally. In the meantime, you can try to find people who share common interests (movies, hangouts, games, gym, sports, clubs, etc.), and who knows...you may just stumble upon someone great, there. Good luck!

maybe it's just not the right time for you to get a girlfriend right now, so that's why you don't have a girlfriend right now. everything happens for a reason. you still got plenty of time to find yourself a girlfriend tho, just know that and keep it in mind please...but i wish you the best

@sweetkitten99

But why was it everyone else's time to get a girlfriend except mine? What about me is so bad that I was left behind in such a way?

I would try not to take it too personally (easier said than done). People meet the right people at various times in their lives, I feel. Don't lose hope

@makeitCount1 Hard not to lose hope when you've actually mustered up the courage to tell people you like them on more than one occasion and you get politely turned down every time. I suppose I've stopped trying at this point.

I understand how you feel. I'm still single, while my high school friends have gotten married. I wanted to say that you never know what could happen tomorrow, the next day, and the next. You may meet someone in the next month...who knows

Maybe I'm just really ugly and I don't even realize it. So many wonderful possibilities.

@Dimensional It's hard not to think about the things you don't have like a girlfriend when the people around have such a relationship. Do know that in life, everyone moves through different stages and have different happenings. In short, all our stories are different -- some people have girlfriends later, some earlier, and some are in a relationship before, but are not anymore. I don't think there's anything wrong with you as you mentioned you have casual friends who are girls. So if you are not repelling your friends, do you think you are repelling the "girl"? After all, isn't a relationship one step after a friend? Here are some questions I think might be able to help guide a bit better:

What do you hope having a girlfriend will give you beside fitting in with those around you?

If you want to get into relationship, can you give yourself an entire a timeline like a year or two to meet the right person?

What do I need now to be more confident in talking to and meeting girls?

Another thing you can do is look into the history of your family's, relatives's, and other people's relationships outside of your school and ask them what age did they entered a relationship. You might find that their ages in which they meet their significant other varies. And if you find these numbers, what does it say to you?

Take care and may your situation work out the best for you.

@PacificSunrise

By "casual friend" I suppose I meant girls who sometimes exchange greetings with me.

And I guess by "repel" I meant that none of them seem interested in going beyond that. I feel like I'm not disliked, but that girls don't necessarily want to get to know me, if that makes sense.

@Dimensional I understand what you are saying. It's like conversations don't go beyond more than greetings and nothing deeper. There is a great book by Dale Carnegie called "How to Win Friends and Influence People." Perhaps you can check it out and see if it can help you with your conversations and move beyond the basic greeting exchanges.

@PacificSunrise I'm not trying to belittle your advice, which has truly been helpful, but it seems I'm worse off than I thought.

@Dimensional

Hi there, I'm Paolo, 22year old bachelor, have a stable job and a house of my own. Yeah, no girlfriend since birth, and it's totally fine. I shared it not to boast, but to tell you that it's okay.

I know, it's irritating at some point. It decreases your self esteem. The questions like "is there something wrong with me?", "am I not attractive?" kicks in. But this I tell you, everything is fine.

Understand that not everything is going to your way. You are not left alone, believe me. Don't rush things because the faster you get up high, the harder the downfall.

Why not try to reach your goal in life first?

It's going to be hard. As in, really really hard but it's all worth it in the end. The right, and perfect WOMAN for you will come eventually in your life. (I emphasized WOMAN because they are totally different from the GIRLS ;) )

@Dimensional

Well, I'll tell you this much, if someone is put off simply by how you look, then they aren't worth your time. Honestly I feel bad for very good looking people because its even harder for them to find someone who loves who they are, and not how they look. And another thing, just because you don't have a girlfriend doesn't mean anything is wrong with you. Being a freshman is more of an experimental phase. A lot of young people are really just looking for someone to date, and chances are you don't give off that vibe. You seem a little more humble and not super extroverted, and that's usually what catches attention the most. Just because a lot of your friends are dating people it doesn't mean it's wrong not to. This is a weird stage where relationships are just, odd. Because more times than not people your age don't even know who they are yet. In my opinion this should be the time where you're developing a close relationship with yourself. Accepting yourself, discovering your own views, hopes, and interests. And chances are the girls they're dating don't know who they are yet either. Yes, being single seems sort of lonely, but relationships especially in the early years of highschool can be absolute hell. More times than not everyone is just looking for the experience of loving someone than actually feeling it. I call this, being in love with being in love. If you hold out and stay true to yourself, one day you will find someone who just fits. Without effort. Without changing any nature of your being. As long as you aren't a total asshole or throw your boogers everywhere then there is nothing wrong with you. Think of yourself as a shoe. Yes, a lot of people may be able to force their foot in, but very few people will fit perfectly. It doesn't mean there is anything wrong with the shoe. It's just not the right fit. And with about 8 billion people in the world and you living there for over 2 years might just mean someone for you just simply isn't there. If you meet a girl you like, just be nice. Smile, laugh. Try to seem friendly. Girls are timid at that age. If you close yourself off then they will take it as you not being interested or that they are bothering you. Even if being confident or talkative isnt your strong suit, a simply smile will be very charming to most girls. Even a change of pace. I personally prefer more introverted type of guys, kind of quiet, kind of strange, but kind of sweet. Even a little awkward and dorky, haha. But just remember, even if you don't have a single girlfriend in highschool, it doesn't mean that there isn't someone out their that will love the living hell out of you one day. Maybe you're simply more unique than most guys, and you just haven't met that girl yet. All and all, don't force it, don't worry about it. The harder you look the harder it will be to find. In a way, you're right. It does just kind of happen. And chances are if it was forced, then it isn't real. Don't worry. What is meant to be will be. And you've got plenty of time. Fall in love with yourself first and you'd be amazed how other people will look at you.

Not sure if ill be of much help but i am in the same boat. I was in a relationship before (before my ex dumped me) but wish i could be in one again. Lately anytime i meet a girl i get flat out rejected and "friendzoned". It may be because im quiet and shy, and that may scare people away. As for me im going to just stop trying and work on other things in my life like college, and maybe if i do, then ill find a girl when i least expect it. I would love to be in a relationship and its hard to not be, exspecially when you see everyone else in one. But its not the end of the world. Not when you have your whole life ahead of you. Like me i hope you to find someone, just dont give up. Hope is what keeps me going smiley @Dimensional
