Emotionally unavailable advice

I have figured out that I am emotionally unavailable and cannot maintain any type of relationship. I want to be in a relationship but I get so annoyed and like to be by myself that I always cut things off after the second date. I've had sex once and don't really care for it so maybe I'm just scared of being intimate/vulnerable with someone but I don't know how to change this aspect of me.

Any advice on how to make myself more open and willing to be in a relationship? Should I see a therapist to work through these issues? I hate feeling like this and it has constantly been on my mind recently.

@affableTangerine6360 Hi there, first off thanks for the post! Why is it that you've deemed yourself "emotionally unavailable"? You mentioned you get annoyed - is it that you are annoyed of being in a relationship or being with another person? I can totally relate. I actually didn't used to feel this way until I ended my last relationship (last year). Since then I have just really not been wanting to put myself out there and meet new people and get back into the dating scene (by choice) but sometimes I think it would be nice to date or go on dates - I think I get sick of people (not intended at all) but I feel like I need a lot of alone time - and this past year I have allowed myself to be alone and to do my own thing and focus on the things that make me better and the things I enjoy doing. My ex just was not the one for me and I decided I just needed a break from being in a relationship - and there's nothing wrong with that! You are totally allowed to feel the way you feel - it doesn't necessarily mean you are broken or flawed - maybe you just aren't ready emotionally to commit to a relationship - that's totally okay! I think it's important not to shut yourself off from the world. You can still participate in some sort of social life, take a class, hang out with a friend, at least set a goal to getting out and about a certain amount of times per week, but in terms of making yourself more open to a relationship - i'm not sure you really can make yourself ready. I think it really just comes in time, when you are doing your own thing and not really looking, I think there's no way to really plan to be in a relationship. It just happens when it happens. I can tell you that what works for many people is focussing on doing the things you love and the things you enjoy doing. Therapy could be a great option for you if you think you are seeking someone from the outside to listen to you without judgment (some people don't have many people in their lives they can talk to openly). If something deeper down is bothering you or you want to talk about something specific that has made you feel this way (less open and willing to be in a relationship) then there is no harm in looking into therapy. Take this time to listen to yourself and take care of yourself - don't pressure yourself. I think when you are ready, everything will happen in the right time. Take care. xo
