Handling emotions in relationships
Hey I don’t know where else to turn so I’m here I need advice on how to handle emotions in a relationship whenever me and my girlfriend argues which is at least once a week i don’t know how to handle them I get over stressed and overwhelmed because I’ve put a lot into the relationship and I want everything to go good and smoothly so when we have arguments I don’t know how to emotionally handle them. This is a person who I love and care about a lot in a relationship that I have given and put my all into how am I not supposed to stress over that or let that get to me I been struggling for a while now trying to figure this out but I can’t at all each time we get into one I’m stressed out and overwhelmed and never react well this is my first major relationship and I never saw a healthy relationship all of this is new to me and I’m trying to make it as perfect as it can be I know arguments are bound but when ever we get into one I can’t control my emotions or detach them from the situation could someone please give advice or help I’m really struggling with this.
@Tdb55 I can tell that this relationship is really important to you. When you have put a lot of stake in something, it makes sense to want to hold on to it and make it be good, and it is natural to be afraid of losing it. But also, it sounds like you have already recognized the wisdom that fights are inevitable and you don't choose your emotions. Ultimately, you know yourself and your comfort levels best, and it is part of your role in the relationship to set boundaries and communicate so that disagreements can be dealt with in a way that allows for more openness and expression rather than fear. That can be a vulnerable process, so be kind to yourself and her as you see what works best!
