I don't know how to handle my relationship situation

This is the firs time I open myself up about what I've been dealing with in my life and relationship with my girlfriend (or probably ex girlfriend, still not quite sure) I'm sorry if the message is a little bit long .

I'm 26 and I've been dating this woman who's 24 for about 4 years . I have always felt like she's not completely supportive with my personal development in aspects like professional studies , family and health . I had the chance of studying in another country with a scholarship because of my good grades and when she learnt that she hadn't win the same she changed her behaviour with me and started to speak things as if me taking that chance was to abandon her and to not love her with her even hiting me once and easily insulting me and my family.

I decided to go and we broke up during the 6 months of the scholarship. When I returned back home and we had the chance to speak about what had happen she apologized and mentioned she was taking emotional therapy to improve that behaviour and not to hurt me emotionally or physically any more. We returned to a relationship but we started to have the same issues as before , whenever something good like a new job offer or diploma arrived she said that I was making her feel less of a person and that I wasn't a good man for her.

We stopped seeing each other for 1 whole year in which I decided to spend all that time in my physical and mental health. I went to the gym , I had therapy and my life started to improve a lot , I began a business and improved in several skills I've always wanted to and in my heart I've always felt something special and inexplicable that I've tried to rationalize as the love I feel for her. I tried to speak with her again and saw that she had made a good change of what she had mention before , not trying to control what I did or what my time was spent at and since I think I love her , I asked her to try one more time to be together.

This time everything was fine for about 6 months ,when I found a new job and started to study a diploma on cooking and my fee time started to diminish she started to behave like before , this time saying insults about my family and me , and threatening to hurt herself and saying that I didn't love her because I gave to little time to our time together. It's important to say that I used to work 8 hours between my job and the studies , but still after everything I left the gym and stopped practicing the skills I used to do like drawing or playing music, everyday I called her on the phone and tried to do activities such as studying a new language or playing her favourite videogames or watching her favourite TV series and , on weekends the only completely free day I had (because I work 6 days a week) I spent it with her.

I feel completely abused and hurt because my free time was always for her , my earnings were spent them on things she liked to do and even went as far así buying the best tickets to a concert of a band she wanted to see with me. She has mentioned she doesn't like that my family spends more time with me than her and that I'm dependant on my family because I dont give her more time . This year I had the chance of spending a couple of weeks at my father's home who lives in a different state and she of course felt angry and went as far as to call me saying that she was going to hurt herself because I had left and she felt abandoned again. She stated that me spending time with my family is not being man enough for her and that I should slowly leave them and be only with her and doing the same she does. She doesn't study, she is not actively looking for a job and only stays at her home everyday looking at her home. I feel really bad because I think I love her but I know it's not healthy to live like I am.

Hi there. I think your gf has an abandonment issue. Why I know it, because I have it too 😂

I’m a lot like your gf (or ex, I’m not sure but I’ll refer her as gf) but I’m lot older so I’m more mature than that I think. But I could say I do understand her.

I’d say she has to have her own life. Your relationship is what they call codependent, where there’s no independence in your life. It’s too enmeshed. She has to stop controlling you and you also has to know how to make her feel safe but still maintaining your boundary. She can be too much and demanding a lot. But don’t give in. Not because you don’t love her, but you should love yourself more. And she has to learn to love herself. She needs you all the time and get jealous of everyone that get your time or attention because she is scared of being abandoned and that’s an issue that she has to solve by herself. Why she’s scared of being abandoned? Is it because she’s scared you will leave her? Then assure her if that makes her feel safe. She’s scared, that’s why she tries to control you. Try to advice her to have her own life and friends, not depending on you alone, and maintain your boundary.

If you want to understand more about her behaviour, read on abandonment issue or anxious attachment.

I would say you’re a good bf. But please be soft but firm with her. She needs guidance. And don’t let her control you. Wishing you the best :)
