Relationship advice
So I have been with my current girlfriend for almost 3 years. To make a long story short, we’ve been through a lot together from losing our place to live, having no money, an awful car accident, you name it but we’ve always come out on top. I took on raising her son ( met him at 9 months old, he’s now 3 1/2. I love them both dearly and I don’t want to lose them. We have hit a bump in the road though, that I am scared we aren’t going to make it past. I’ve done a lot of things wrong, I have not always been a great partner to her. I’m sometimes emotionally checked out, I have cheated 1 time and yes it was a huge mistake. To put it lightly, I haven’t treated her the way I know she deserves and I haven’t been the parter or person I know she deserves. She’s fed up with it and I honestly can’t blame her, I know all of this is my fault, but I want to do better, I want to show her that I understand where I’ve lacked, and am doing wrong and that I can be everything she needs. I want to just hands down be a better person. At this point she doesn’t believe anything that I say because I have been guilty of the false promises. I just need some advice on what I can do to help fix this.
Hello there. It must have been tough. Well done for reaching out and being honest. Not sure if I can offer advice, but I have been through something similar here. I find it takes great courage to admit faults to the partner, and it is important, for me as a first step to reconciliation. I found Esther Perel's podcasts quite useful. No matter what the outcome is, be gentle to yourself! We are all humans afterall. We make mistake, but we also have a huge scope of humility to learn from them and fix it. Good luck.
