Could I be falling for a friend?

Okay, so about two or three months ago I recieved a friend request from someone on Facebook. There were no pictures of him on his profile and we didn't have any mutual friends so it seemed a bit random. But I sent him a message anyway in case it was someone that I knew from school and found out that it was actually the former best friend of a guy I dated seven years ago. He'd bumped into me in town with one of his mates a few weeks before hand and hadn't been able to put a name to my face until he saw my name pop up on someone elses profile page.

We started messaging back and forth in an attempt to catch up with each other since we never really spoke much back then and realised that we actually have quite a lot in common. He's into the same kind of films and music as me and we'd both bought tickets to see a band that the both of us like so we decided that it would be fun to hang out. Especially since we would soon be bumping into each other again.

Now we talk pretty much everyday and I find myself telling him things that I've never really felt comfortable enough to share with anyone else. I've opened up to him about how I don't really like myself that much and always feel like people are not that interested in me. But instead of judging me for it he just tells me that he understands and encourages me not to put myself down so much. He even opened up himself and told me that he often feels the same way so I guess that's just another thing that we have in common.

I think I'm starting to like him as more than just a friend and I'm afraid that he won't want to speak to me anymore if I tell him the truth.

What should I do?

@vladtheimpaler When you can open up to someone, especially if it's not normal for you to do so, that means something. And what's even more important is that they open up to you as well. You two seem to like each other very much. I sadly can't speak from much experience, but my guess is to wait at least until the next time you see each other in person and then see how exactly he acts around you. Maybe somehow if the conversation allows it, talk about relationships...maybe via talking about the past, when you were still with your Ex. From there you can try and move the conversation to what his ideas for the future are, relationship wise. Not with you, but in general. My guess is that his hopes will be very similar to yours. From there, take a day to think over what you've observed and see if things start to add up more. And then, no matter how scary it is, when the conversation allows, maybe when you're planning to meet up next or when you bump into each other...ask him out. That step will be the hardest, I know, but reading your post, I feel like you won't be let down. And once you're on a date, I'm sure there'll be no stopping you.

I wish you all the best for the future

@sensitiveSugar8860 I suppose you have a point there. I'm just terrible at trying to figure out if he likes me back. Sometimes it seems like maybe he does. But he's kind of shy and awkward so it's hard to tell.

@vladtheimpaler I know what yoh mean and I habe had more than my share of similar situations. But I never regret telling them my feelings and establishing what exactly the deal was. Otherwise you'll drown in the endless possibilities and hypotheticals within your head, and trust me, you do not want that

I believe in you to make the right decision😊 good luck for the future

@sensitiveSugar8860 I decided to tell him the truth after realising that it would be better to do so before I let myself get too attached. I figured it would hurt less to have him tell me I'm just a friend now than if he were to say that to me in two or three months time when my feelings have gotten a lot more intense. But it turned out pretty good because he told me the only reason he'd approached my friend when we were hanging out all those months ago was because he saw me there and thought I was cute

@vladtheimpaler I'm so glad to hear that! And I'm very proud of you that you made a well though over decision and took your chances. You see, it doesn't always turn out bad. And now you can go from there and hopefully succeed where I rarely did😊 props to you! I wish you two all the best for the future
