I hate my best friend.

Though we've been friends for over 5 years, I can't help but despise everything about her sometimes. I'm so jealous, she's pretty, smart, outgoing, funny, everyone likes her. Why am I in the background? Why doesn't anyone want to get to know me? Why am I not her?

I wish people could be happy for one another more, instead of always being so petty and jealous. It reminds me of the songs "Isn't it a Pity?" and "I, Me, Mine" by George Harrison.

Speaking of that, you could be caught in a vicious circle. Your unhappiness and insecurity will make you less approachable, and then when you do not get as much attention as you would like, you become more insecure. Try to let go. People want to surround themselves by others who seem confident, happy, and secure. Be happy for what you have.

It sounds like someone who is pretty, smart, outgoing, funny and popular considers you a good (if not best) friend. Does that not count for something?

In the end, it's the really really good friends who will have real meaning in your life, not the acquaintances. Don't crave attention from people who won't mean anything in your life. Sometimes people are naturally more extroverted and make friends more easily. But introverts can still make really good strong friendships, and that's what counts most.

Someone told me once that A (high quality) people will surround themselves with A people, even though sometimes it can be frustrating and challenging. And B people will choose C people, so that they can be King/Queen. Be the best you can be, and you will grow stronger and happier. There's no one who deserves your support more than your friends.
