Is my friend using me?

Am I being used by my friend?

It's very long to explain because it's a friendship that started really young, we know each other since I'm 15, I'm 21.

My friend and I used to have a lot of fun together. I'm a really generous person so it doesn't bother me to actually help people and my friend because this is what a friend is for.

At some point in our lives, we only could see each other in the week end because we studied in different cities and when we saw each other, I was the only friend she knew on the area so I was basically her only choice of going out. The more I thought and reflect about the more I realized I gave so much to this friendship and never received in return and I wanted to know if I'm overthinking things or if it's indeed a one-sided friendship.

I am the only who can drive between the two of us and I don't really mind driving us around because it allows us to go wherever we want, however, I start to realize that I never really any acknowledgement for all I did for her. All the meals I paid for her when she couldn't, all the times I drove her to places and all the times I hang out with her even when I was busy. I'm a people pleaser and I love to help when I can. I never asked to be paid back for all the things I did but a little thank you wouldn't hurt right?

One time, it really surprised me because this friend once got into my car and just said "drop me there I have to do grocery shopping." Without any hellos, without asking how I was or if I minded taking her there. In the moment I didn't really pay much attention to it, it's later on when I reflected on the day I spent with her.

The thing is, since we only hang out during the week end, it was a short time but we spent most of the days together. However, during the week when she's with her other friends at her universities I never got any news updates to see how I was doing, it was only in the week end when she sent me a text telling me "are you free today?"

In the beginning it wasn't always like this but when we do hang out, I feel like she's not a hundred percent into the conversation. I'm a listener more than I'm a talker and she speaks a lot. I'm a good listener and I always prioritize being in the moment and I know she enjoys the attention but when I'm the one finally speaking, I don't receive the same attention, in the middle of me speaking I would see her checking her phone, texting her other friends, even picking up phone calls while I'm speaking.

My problem is that I'm too nice and I expect people to be as nice and caring as I am and I can't never bring myself to speak and tell people when they're rude.

I don't receive the same enthusiasm and i terest when I'm the one leading the conversation and it may crazy but I never really caught up into the wrong side of this friendship until I hang out with another friend and the minute I offered her a ride, she thanked me a million times and expressed how she was grateful I took the time to pick her up, or when I helped her pay for an escape game and she immediately tried to pay me back. I never received this kind of reaction and care for making it up to me. I never really got a thank you from my friend or a text unless it was to get something from me.

I'm still friend with this person and I thought that I was being careful this time but I don't even realize when I give too much, a few days ago I offered her to sleep at my place when she couldn't get back home during the night, I also offered gave her some of my food (i'm a student, I was supposed to eat this but she didn't have anything), I allow her to stay at my place when she doesn't have classes, I do all of this without thinking because I think it's a normal thing to do but I NEVER heard a thank you for this. I do it without expecting anything but I feel like saying thank you and please is the least you can do. And even yesterday, I allowed to stay at my place and she didn't even say please I never catch up on it in the moment. "Let me crash at your place" is what she says.

Also, yesterday, she introduced me to one of her friend and I actually like her, she's really nice and we get along really well and I thought she would be happy that her friend and I get along but she closes off everytime we both have a conversation and she gets on her phone and doesn't even listen. Why would she act like this? Aren't we friends?

Also I tried to sent her texts during the week but she never answers while I see her tweeting everyday which means she sees my texts and she even told me that she's taking a break from social media but then talk in friends group chat? I don't get it. I hate being used and it makes me mad to think I was dumb enough and too nice to realize it. I thought I was actually mindful but I guess I'm not that aware.

None of my friends act like she does, they are all so kind and their text messages are all so caring and they always asks me how I am and if I'm doing well but her? She sends me a text only when she needs something from me.

The problem is, she's a long time friend and I can't bring myself to just end the friendship, especially when all our friends know each other.

I've been thinking a lot about this, I would love to get some advice on what to do and if it's just me overthinking or not.

I've known her for so long and I can read people I know really well and I know when she's faking and she's faking her laugh and expressions a lot among people around her.

I'm rambling sorry, thank you for reading until the end, I would love to hear your point of view!

@MollyBrown560,

I hear you.

Thanks for sharing, that takes courage.

Having said that, my 1st thought that came up is, are you not using your friend?

Not on purpose. It feels like you have some sort of "need" to please her.

Why is that? What do you need that need for?

If you give, you should do so freely, without expecting anything in return.

If you give freely yet you feel like being taken advantage of, then ask yourself why that might be. You cannot blame her for what you offer.

You could talk about how you feel to her. Just how you feel, staying within yourself. No blaming, no "but you never text me back". It is written nowhere that she should texted. That is what you expect, want, need, and you cannot control others. She might understand, or not. If she truly understands, she will listen to how you feel without defending, justifying, or even attacking. And if she understands (not necessarily agree, but truly understands), there might be a foundation to build on mutual understanding.

Last but not least, only offer what you can offer without expecting anything in return. Because if you don't, you start offering space you don't have. And sooner or later you will notice, maybe too late, that you have been giving away your self, ignoring your true being.

Take care.
