Learning how to have friends

Hi,

I’m new here and joined because I’m super lonely and tbh scared of falling back into the kind of depression I had a few years back.

So, I want to learn how to make and be a good friend, and also looking for ideas of fun things I can do alone of an evening/weekend while I’m getting there.

I’m 32, have always been single (never been on a date even), and am now living alone since my close-as-a-twin sister got married and moved away 4 months ago. I had an unusual upbringing - home educated in the sticks, and while we did socialise it was always but always in family groups. I had my first friend who was MY friend aged 24... It took me years to learn to be an individual rather than just being part of a family group, and now I find myself more of an individual than I would like. I do have a couple of kind friends and Zoom-colleagues, but they have their own lives which really don’t include me and I usually feel I’m an interruption even though they try to include me when I butt in.

So cuppy-people, for the sake of a weirdo ambivert who never really learnt how to make friends, how can I

1) find and create friendship/s which doesn’t leave me feeling lonelier than ever from the effort (bonus points if I can also find a significant other somewhere along the way haha)

2) embrace the season of solo - what ways can I have fun by myself? As I’ve been home-working during Covid, outside-the-house ideas are preferable but open to any suggestions - unadventurous me who lives in a small country town could use some help!!

Hey!! I'm glad you're here! Thank you for sharing your story with us . It is soooo important to have things to do alone and enjoy them, i've been working on that sooo hard last year and now.

Being alone doesnt have to be a bad thing!

Its nice to know yourself better before talking to people and making friends.

What do you like to do when you got enough time for relaxing or after work? 😊

Thanks Katia!

I tend to read or watch a movie, or go for a good long walk out into the countryside. Walks are my happy place and my place to cry as well - I find its less depressing to cry while walking somehow.

The one idea I saw over the holidays was visiting your local spaces like a tourist - that still seemed like it would fun with a friend, but something that could potentially be fun in a different way solo.

Sounds a lot like myself! Hehe i love reading (specially stephen king or raymond chandler) also walking alone in nature just makes me feel alive, enjoying the weather, the plants, the animals...

I do cry too when i go in nature, its just like feeling no judgement for doing anything in a place where nobody sees u.

You could just walk around or jump or run or do whatever and it would be ok!

I have to admit that i love dancing around alone with headphones on just enjoying me. (You should try it 😳) hahaha

And i also looove doing things around the city like going to the park, market, fun stores, library and stuff like that.

I think it would be a lot of fun to do those things with someone but people in my city just dont enjoy it as much as i do.

I dance like Chandler from Friends... it’s just embarrassing even when I’m by myself lol. I guess some sort of dance class might be an idea, if they could teach me some moves haha.

I do think I would enjoy mooching around those sort of places myself, but its kinda tough not to feel lonely at the same time when I’m solo. Like its always there, spoiling what could be fun. You and I sound like we could enjoy mooching around places together - there must be local people who would enjoy the same thing, if only we could find them!! 🙂

Let yourself feel free for a moment! Enjoy it! The first step is knowing yourself deeply and loving u, it is hard, i struggle with it sometimes. But now i feel more confident with my own self being alone.

And hey! Im here now, you can talk to me anytime <3

Dont be embarrassed of doing things you love just because you dont have company... i did that, and i felt so wrong my whole life for that
