To be or not to be, that is the question . . .

This is a long one, sorry.

So, my best friend and I have been together about 7 years. We hadone of those relationships where we couldgo without talking for a month or more, but then hangout and it was like no time went by at all since we last hung out. Until recently . . .

Ever since I transferred to my university and moved to the city about 30 minutes away, she has become extremely jealous and manipulative. I have tried so many times over the last year to get together to have dinner or go to a park for a picnic or see a movie (the list goes on), but she always hasan excuse or willagree, but then when I double checkthe time or day, she willactlike the plan was never finalized when it had been. It has been very frustrating, especially after she started complainingabout me never seeing her or giving her time when I have been trying to all along. We have fought so many times about this and she says I don't want to be her friend, that I don't care, that I hate her, so on and so forth. It's all crap. Utter crap. Nothing I say or do convinces her that I care so much about her as a person and friend, which I do!

Fast forward to now. This has happened severaltimes, but this just happened tonight, so I will use this example. So, earlier today I sent her (we'll call my bf "A") a text asking if she would go to Ikea with me on Sunday. Turns out she is already going with someone tomorrow. Cool. That's fine with me. After work, another friend of mine asks to go out for dinner because she really needs an ear to talk to, so we go for dinner. Well, Acalls while we are eating, so I deny the call and text her saying I'm at dinner and I'll call her when I'm done. We finish eating, I call twice, and get voicemail twice. My friend still doesn't want to go home, so we head out to a barcade for some drinks and fun. While there, I keep checking my phone for areplyfrom A,but there is none. I assume she fell asleep, no biggie. At the end of the night, I take a picture of my other friend being silly and post it to Facebook. A few minutes later, A texts me," boo you whore." She then goes on about how "what's her face" (mind you, my other friend is tagged, so she knows her name) is replacing her and that I lied about calling her twice. So, to prove I'm not lying to her, I take a screen shot of my conversation history with her clearly displaying the two times I called with over 20 seconds of call time on both. She never replied after that.

Like I said, this happens all the time. Almost every time I hang out with someone else, she texts me fussing me out for replacing her. I just don't know what else to say or do to convince her otherwise. I have another friend that A utterly hates (mainly becauseI'm friends with her) and I make sure to never be mentioned or tagged on FB in order to prevent A from getting jealous. Now, I feel like I can never share my good experiences with people because it might upset A. I'm tip toeing on glass in order to keep A happy, while she never seems to do much in return. My other two friends keep telling my to dump her becausethe pain isn't worth it, but I just can't let go that easily. I really do care about her, but it is negatively affecting my mental health.

So, to be friends or not to be friends is the question . . .

I know, right? I am getting tired of trying, but I know she has some anxiety problems and I keep trying because I want to protect her from the pain. In the end, I am not helping her grow as a person by continuing to allow this behavior to occur, but I still want to be her friend. I want to be friends with the old A, not this new jealous person that twists every word and situation I am in.

I'm really sorry to hear about this. I have had really nasty fights with my oldest friends and I understand completely how devastating it can be for your mental wellbeing. I think you have to just be honest with her. I'm not saying that will be easy, or that it will necessarily work out the way you want but the next time you actually talk to her (not on FB or through texts, believe me, I know, text fights never go well) tell her how this is bothering you and how you feel about her. Maybe she will see the light that you actually are a friend worth keeping. And even if she doesn't, at least you'll know that you gave it your best try. I hope this helps and it goes well for you. Good luck :)
