Uneven Friendships
Hi I'm new here and was hoping to get some different perspectives on an issue I've been having with my friend. I don't quite know how to talk to her about it, and as a result, I am drifting away from her. We've been friends since childhood, so I really don't want that to happen.
I'll try to keep it brief. I have a best friend who is dealing with a very challenging life crisis, but she is also toxic, which is clear to everyone in our friend group. She does not take care of herself, physically or mentally, and so her loved ones do that work for her. We are her therapists, financial subsidies, emotional support animals, personal assistants, chefs, etc. I used to be her roommate and so this work would largely fall on me. Recently, I've begun to put up boundaries and clearly articulate my needs. Rather than set up a more equitable relationship, this has caused fights. I have now moved away to get out of this unhealthy dynamic. My question is: does anyone have any thoughts on repairing broken friendships? Creating space to deal with your struggles? Knowing when to take a step back even when you want to be helpful? Coming back to relationships after a break? Any insight you have would be great. Thank you for listening.
