Avoidant partner
I started seeing my avoidant boyfriend 5 months ago. We were inseparable. We were friends and he would text me all the time call me invite me to everything he did. We spent every day together. After a week or so we started spending more time alone. We would listen to our favorite songs in the car until 6am and eventually we kissed and he stayed over. We spent every second together for 2 weeks then a day apart then back on schedule. A week later he was acting distant so I asked him about it he said he wasn’t attracted to me and saw me as more of a friend but wanted to keep things going. A week later his ex texted him and suddenly he just wanted to be friends with me. That lasted a day before he kissed me again. We went to the city together he still stayed over most nights. We were back on track. Then his ex called him and he got distant and I said what are we doing here and he said we were just friends again. This time it lasted longer but he still came by every day. A few weeks later he admitted he was always attracted to me. We got closer he was over every day. I told him one night that I was sick of being called his friend and I wanted more he said he still wasn’t sure. The next day we had a 4 hour conversation about us dating. He said he wasn’t a good boyfriend he would get comfortable need his space do things on his own. I told him space was fine as long as he talked to me. He said he was afraid of breaking up or hurting me or becoming so attached to me. I told him if someone is going to get hurt here it’s me. He said he didn’t want to do that so I told him then don’t hurt me. A week later he asked me out. He told everyone he made me tell everyone including my parents who I don’t talk to like that. The first week was amazing everything I could ask for. The next week he pulled away. I didn’t hear from him until 12pm then never again after 2pm. I yelled at him about it the next day but he was nearly just as distant. The next day I barely heard from him then we went to the city together with his friends. I had a longer chat with him about it and he said he was just taking space for himself and he knew he would see me the whole weekend. He was distant the whole weekend but better than he was. I had a chat with him at the bar about it and how it upset me. He said he knew he was pulling away and it scared him and he didn’t know why. We had 4 more chats that week. He sucks at them he either makes jokes or just doesn’t engage or resolve anything. I lost my Job that week he came over but wouldn’t stay over. This sent me into a spiral. I never needed him more and he couldn’t even stay over. He left while I was crying and in a horrible state. The next day we talked nothing really got resolved. We had a good day Friday then Saturday *** hit the fan. We fought in the car because yet again he didn’t want to stay over which he normally always did. I didn’t understand why the sudden change. I will admit I was a lot to deal with that week but why can’t I have a bad few days. I lost my job and felt like I was losing him too it’s really hard. That night I told him I needed him to stay over a few nights a week and text or call a few times a day. He said he didn’t know if he wanted to do that he wanted to go with the flow. I said I wasn’t happy and my needs weren’t being met. He said he needed to think about if he wanted to stay together. 2 days of silence he then told me he still didn’t know. 2 weeks later him being extremely distant we talked about it again he said he still didn’t think about it because when he does he gets scared and thinks of something else. I told him to look up avoidant attachment. I told him I would do anything to make to work and I just need him to meet me a fraction of the way. I gave him so much space I stopped calling and texting I barely hear from him I don’t feel like we are dating and I don’t recognize the man I loved so much. And I don’t know how much longer I can give him to think but I don’t want to give up on him and all I have ever wanted was to show him pure and genuine love. He said he knew I would never hurt him and he knew I was doing nothing wrong and he knew how much I care for him and how I always put him first and it scares him. We are still in limbo waiting on him to come to terms with how he wants to proceed. I want to sit him down next week and say this is what I need if you can’t do that I’m done and you’re throwing away something beautiful because you can’t send a few text messages and sleep over twice a week. I’m so hurt over this I just want him back so badly it is breaking me.

Hello. It must certainly hurt to be ignored by someone who you fall in love with 😢
Do you think calling your friend's behaviour avoidant is to the point, or is it some major incapability of his being in a relationship in general (and just one at a time!)?
First and foremost, I believe there are two places for ex girlfriends (or ex boyfriends): either in the "I am wishing you well, but we are in touch no more" area (maybe except some short and casual "how are you" once a year), or in the "blocked connections" section.
Do you think your friend's friendzoning you, but at the same taking the full advantage of being in a relationship with you wasn't some eat the egg and have the egg acting?

From my very first-hand experience with an avoidant person: The beginning of the relationship might look easier because that is the time when the physical excitement and hormones take control of everything. But when a few months are passing by it is getting more about emotions and brains, to build a long-lasting connection.
Avoidant behaviour patterns are not something that is "repaired" by just waiting. It's not like a flu. More like a broken engine. And it might be very hard to achieve it without some help of a professional therapist.
