Boyfriend broke up with me

We’d been having mild conflicts related to me wanting more consistent communication and to spend more time together, but he has been struggling to take care of himself and juggle his responsibilities. His lack of effort is something that I took personally and felt insecure about, which really frustrated him. I told him I wanted to be a support rather than a burden. He then ignored me for a week and sent me an email lying about his phone being broken and saying he doesn’t think we’re the right people for each other. And then he has ignored all my attempts to communicate after that. We work together seasonally over the summer, so I’m pretty stressed about things being really uncomfortable and I don’t understand why he broke up with me this way instead of more respectful. I just don’t know what to do, and I’m not sure if he just can’t stand me. I’m really hurt.
