This morning my father’s milk spilled because of my cats and when he asked me for a towel I got one but it was wet. Then he yelled that he wanted a dry towel and then I tossed them to him he screamed like I haven’t heard from years. I was having a panic attack but both my parents made it worse by not calming me. I was snatched and held too firmly as dad screamed at my face that felt like I was being slapped as they both shouted to get over it. I finally had to hide to cry and just stopped crying to write this experience and now I feel like I can’t do anything right with them.

I'm sorry that happened to you. You certainly didn't deserve to get screamed at.

The only thing I clean up with a dry rag is water. Otherwise, I start with a wet rag first, then follow up with a dry one. So, in my opinion, you really did the right thing by handing him a wet rag.

I suspect that something else was bothering your parents and they were already upset or feeling stressed. It reminds me of a time when my brother had a really difficult day, and in the evening he sat down with a cup of tea. My cat stuck her paw into his tea. Although he remained calm throughout his difficult day, when my cat did that, he had a huge fit. Normally he would've just shrugged it off and told himself that he shouldn't put the tea were the cat could get at it. But because he was already feeling super tense, that last little thing is what caused him to lose his cool.

Do your parents understand about your panic attacks?

As a parent, I often felt as though I couldn't do anything right with my kids, and of course they went out of their way to convince me of that. That was years ago, and now they think I did a pretty good job.

I'm pretty sure you do the right thing, at least as often as anyone else. What are the odds that when your parents aren't upset and screaming, they would agree?

Unfortunately, it's all too common that when people are feeling on edge, they snap at, and say regrettable things to those around them.

I hope you're doing okay now.
