Is asking about prior relationships normal?
I’ve been in relationship with a new girl the past few months. Things are going very well. We are very open in talking about pretty much anything. One thing that seems kind of off is that she likes to ask and talk about my past relationships. I don’t mind talking about it a little but I don’t want her to think I’m still attached to my old relationships. Sometimes she jokingly comments about details of my past. My preference is to keep those conversations to a minimum and plan to talk to her about this but want to know if I’m being overly sensitive.

You're not being overly sensitive dont worry, people just have different preferences. Some like to talk about their past while others dont. So just talk to your girlfriend about this and im sure things will be great!
All the best!

It's great that you're in an open and communicative relationship with this new girl, and it's natural for partners to be curious about each other's past experiences. It's also understandable that you want to maintain boundaries and ensure that she doesn't misinterpret your past as a current attachment. It's not about being overly sensitive; rather, it's about setting healthy boundaries and making sure both of you are comfortable with the topics of conversation. Just have an open and honest discussion with her about your feelings and preferences regarding these discussions, and I'm sure she'll appreciate your honesty and respect your boundaries. It's all part of building a strong and understanding connection.
My friend used to think - “Why should I care about a person’s past? It’s the PRESENT that matters. He’s with ME so right NOW is all that I concern myself with!”
Thats a charming thought. But there’s some very good reasons why partners should be aware of each others past.
1) It’s a part of them. Often, a very important part of them, and how they came to be the person that you’re currently with. To ignore their past is therefore to miss an opportunity to understand them more fully. Imagine someone who just left a 10 year marriage, who has children to her previous husband. Does it make sense not to know anything about that 10 years of her life “because it’s the past”?! Of course those 10 years will impact upon who she is, and will shape her views and how she behaves in relationships. The past shapes the present. How their family treated them in the past, how their partners treated them in the past and more importantly how they themselves behaved in their own relationships in the past are all vital indicators as to who they are.
2) It can tell you about their specific NEEDS. Why did she choose her previous partners? What made their relationships fail? What did she feel they could have improved? Why did she choose you? What is she hoping you will provide that was absent in her previous relationships? Each relationship should be an improvement on the past (ideally). You can’t improve on the past if you don’t know what’s there. Perhaps she might feel insecure about your exes. Some people do ask about past relationships out of a need to compare themselves, or because they fear they won’t measure up with your previous partners. It’s healthy to reassure them about why your exes are your exes, and tell them that your ex is your ex for very specific reasons; that your feelings are resolved with the ex etc.
3) Fixating on the topic of the past suggests unresolved issues. If it’s all she talks about, or if she seems more concerned about the past and is not really living and loving in the present, that’s when it becomes problematic. It’s good to be open to discussing it in intimate detail, but not with negative emotions of jealousy, obsession, suspicion, or motives of using the information in a manipulative way such as using it against you in an argument etc.
Needless to say my friend after many relationships began to realize these things and now understands why it’s quite essential to relationships to understand a persons past. 😹 There is no shame in it, and if it is handled with respect and transparency and proper intentions, then it is a discussion that can bring partners closer together.
Wishing you both all the best!

Great replies and advice. Thank you everyone.
I have no problem talking to her and setting boundaries. I believe we’re both at a place in our lives and experiences to be able to do that.
I just wanted to make sure that my take on this topic isn’t tainted or off base. Second opinions and perspectives never hurt.
